Rinse & Repeat

The weight is finally off my shoulders! I have completed my twenty-day work experience at an events organisation which was undertaken between May and September for my Public Relations Internship 393 unit. So… how did I go?

Whilst the internship appraisal form my supervisor gave me was close to perfect I still feel that I could have done better. Throughout my twenty-day placement (which I’m still currently undertaking), I feel that my public relations knowledge and skills acquired at Curtin University have not been tested at all or applied to a relevant task.

My role at the organisation primarily involves making phone calls and sending emails to relevant organisations for the oncoming event. The emails are templates that I was able to write up at the beginning of my placement which was interesting at the time and tested my creativeness. However now I feel that morale is down and Ctrl C + Ctrl V (copy and paste) are up.

My other role consists of posting selected pictures and captions on Facebook in order to create awareness for the oncoming event.

Despite morale being down and repetitiveness being high, I believe that my communication skills over the phone and writing skills in emails have increased exponentially so I am grateful for that.

Here’s to Public Relations Internship 393 and my final semester at Curtin University!

Half way there and the cup is half full!

I am officially half-way through completing my Public Relations internship at not-for-profit organisation Momentum Forum Events. An organisation that focuses on creating charitable events such as the Pink Ribbon Ball in support of breast cancer research and the Men in Black Ball in support of men’s mental health. My tasks at the organisation include updating the company website, making phone calls to potential sponsors and following up the emails with phone calls.

The inaugural Perth Pet Expo event hosted by my placement organisation takes place at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on December 6th and 7th this year and I have recently been given the large role of coordinating it, promoting it across multiple social media platforms and sourcing sponsors and exhibitors for the event. I feel this has raised my office morale and the large responsibility I have been given will motivate me more to succeed in the task at hand and make this event run as smooth and successful as possible.

While making phone calls until this point has felt like a tiring and draining task, the inaugural event has become my priority and sourcing exhibitors and sponsors finally is enjoyable. I signed our official first sponsor who will be contributing their time and resources into helping the event succeed and have approximately twenty percent of exhibitors paid and ready for the event.

The working environment at the internship is relaxed as it is practically a family run business with the CEO, her daughter and husband being my direct supervisors and people to report to. I am enjoying working close to the CBD minus the traffic in the morning and hope to see my fellow public relations peers at my event.

I look forward to reading your comments and reading your blogs!
