Fashion for some - Mining for me!

Blog 3 - CME
Now, even though mining and resources industry may not be as exciting and fun to some people as fashion or sport, it has been very enlightening and interesting to be exposed to a completely different industry to what I’m used to. My previous job has invloved intensive event management and to see the flip side of that coin has been an experience! The people I’ve met and industry issues and events I’ve been exposed to have made me feel a part of something bigger. Without the resources industry the Australian economy wouldn’t be as strong as it is during this time of such international economic uncertainty. To be a part of the peak representative body (The Chamber of Minerals and Energy) who are the voice of the WA resources sector is exciting. The people I have worked with and met have had extensive experience in everything from politics to law, economics and teaching and bring something different to a diverse team.
Last night I attended a staff function where we enjoyed a 7 course degustation meal as we seat swapped (speed dating style) to a different table with each new course!
This allowed me to talk to people in the organisation I hadn’t had the privilege to speak extensively with before. Office enviroments tend to get so busy with deadlines and meeting you dont have time to get to know people as well as you should. This night was as a thank you reward to everyone for their hard work and really gave a boost to everyone’s engagement and morale. It’s very important to build a strong corporate culture. As Cass Bettinger, (1999, “Use Corporate Culture to Trigger High Performance”) discusses in the Journal of Business Strategy, its about using corporate culture to trigger high performance. Shes says “the challenge is to manage the organization's culture so that you can tap the company's strengths to achieve superior performance and identify its weaknesses in time to overcome them before they cause serious damage” (Use Corporate Culture to Trigger High Performance, 1999). I believe it’s very important to make people feel like the work that they do is appreciated and valued, even though it’s what they are essentially paid to do. People are more likely to perform better and work harder in that type of environment as opposed to negative, unappreciative and un-incentive based environment.
What have your work places done to foster a culture of unity, fun and incentives???

Blog 2 - CME - Busy Busy Busy

Hi everyone

Wow, so much has happened since my last blog post! And I can't believe I'm now in my final week! It's been very busy here and my time has flown by..

Firstly there was Australian Climate Commission Breakfast. It sounds quite dry but it’s always a contentious topic and provokes stimulating debate. This meant I was up at 4:30am and at the venue by 5:30am (which was déjà vu of my last job) but I was happy to be able to assist the Events and Communications Manager with everything from setting up registration tables, place cards to assisting with last minute changes. I found it very insightful to see how different people do different things to be able to compare and contrast to the way I ran events. I learnt a lot! I was kept busy with events as there were two sundowners I was helping prepare for (one in the South West, and the other a boardroom cocktail function). Click here to take a look at some of our upcoming and past events that have been occupying some of my time.

At the breakfast I sat at the media table with a number of journalists from AAP, the Financial Review and WA Business News who then stayed to interview the commission panel and CME’s CEO Reg Howard-Smith at the media doorstop after the breakfast. It was great to see how this doorstop worked and the subsequent media coverage generated as a result. Click here to view the articles that appeared in The West, Trading Room, PerthNow, NineMSN, The Age and Yahoo (to name a few).

It has also been very busy in the Media and Public Affairs portfolio. I have been assisting the Executive Officer of Media and Public Affairs in preparation for her trip to Canberra with a CME Director. This trip was in relation to the proposed heritage listing of a substantial part of the Kimberley region and was an intensive few days last week. Having my supervisor away I was responsible for everything from doing the daily media summary (summarising all articles relevant to industry) from the West, Fin Review, the Australian & WA Business News, to managing incoming media enquiries and accompanying the other Director to TV media interviews. Stay tuned for more to come on what I was up to while my boss was away!
