Nearly ramble time- Meetings and updates

October is just around the corner, therefore this means that Perth ramble is creeping in very soon!
Perth ramble are really trying hard to get more people to sign up for the ramble, this is not as easy as we thought it was going to be. Many people at Curtin have been ignoring our constant information about the event and this is very disheartening. On Monday the 22nd, myself and Rhian had a meeting with the marketing manager, she explained what is needing to be done, updates on what we have achieved and how well we are doing on reaching the over all goal.   Our Facebook page is doing very well, we have received over 100 new likes in a short space of one week, we have had a few new entries and our Instagram page has received a few new followers. Anthea (marketing manager) asked if we could come in and do some corporate calls, to try and gain some companies to enter the ramble. I was more than happy to do this! Therefore, today I went in at 9am and started calling places like delloite , BHP, RAC etc. Most people were very friendly and suggested for me to send them an email with more information. Others were very blunt and didn’t want to know anything about the charity. I’m not sure if anyone of the places that I rang are going to make a team and join the event however, I do know that all emails have been sent out. Fingers crossed that we get a few new corporate entries!

Next Thursday I am going to go in and spend the afternoon with Anthea going through some more stuff on what needs to be done, I’m not 100% on what exactly ill be doing but I’m happy to help any way that I can. So far it has been a positive learning experience, helping this event be bigger and better. It has its challengers however, I think with anything that is important it will always have its ups and downs and it’s your mind set that is the most important thing and your passion. I’m looking forward to next week, to learn new things and hopefully find out if any organizations have signed up for this years ramble.

If you have Instagram please feel free to follow the perth ramble- @perthramble the more followers the better.

Thank you!

Students just don't have time… even for charity?

Today I met with Rhian who is doing the Perth Ramble with me. We met at Curtin to discuss how we are going to get more students involved in the Perth ramble, we also needed to give the Perth Ramble an update about our progress.

We decided to put flyers around campus and talk to students one on one. As we went around campus to speak with students we found to receive the same reaction from students. About 99% of the time the students would look at us as if to say “why are you interrupting my coffee” or gives their friends a little look of “im really not interested”.

It is sad to think our generation has no time to even listen to someone talk for literally 1 minute. Furthermore, its not just the fact that it is rude to the people speaking but it is also disrespectful to the charity who are trying to fundraise money for Telethon.

On the brighter side we did get a few peoples emails and we also met a man called Leo who kindly let us put flyers on his stall, he reassured us and said that we are doing a very good job.

We will be going to our own lectures to talk about the Perth Ramble and to see who would be interested to sign up there. After 2 hours of talking to students we decided to write our update report so that our marketing supervisor Anthea can present it to the committee in tomorrows meeting.

Lastly we have started an Instagram account for the Perth ramble “perthramble” for people to follow and updated the Facebook page where we are running a competition for people to enter and win 3 nights accommodation to Margaret River.

Hopefully we will get better success with students next time, fingers crossed!

Ramble and the social media world!

Today myself and the other intern Rhian had a meeting with the marketing manager Anthea. We arrived at 9am and spoke and exchanged ideas for an hour.
Within our conversation and idea exchange we came up with new ideas for ramble regarding social media.

first we got all access to the Ramble facebook site, twitter and we are going to make a new instagram account which we are both looking forward to managing.

below I will highlight some of the main ideas that we have come up with for each social media outlet.

FACEBOOK:
    • ·      Competition: we decided to run a competition, where one lucky person will win a trip away to Margaret River for 3 nights. To be eligible to win, people need to like the ramble page and share the photo we provide to be in the chance to win. Announcement of the winner will be on th e19th of September.
    • ·      Work with instagram, what is posted on instagram will be posted on facebook also.
    • ·      Post videos of Curtin students signing up for the Ramble/ talking about what they think the Ramble is about.

TWITTER:
·      With twitter we decided to:
o   Advertise the event
o   Use quotes every week; it can be funny, inspirational or health. This helps the Rambles awareness.
o   Using past photos of Ramble therefore, people can see how much fun it is and get a bit of a better idea of what is involved.

INSTAGRAM:
o   The main idea for instagram is to post pictures of UNI students and their involvement with ramble.
o   A countdown until the ramble event (this could be done weekly)
o   Memes – funny and fun.

I am so excited to be able to help manage the social media, I really hope we can make it successful and get the word out for such a worthy charity!

until next time…

Enjoy your day!

Ready Set…. RAMBLE!

I am very excited to be starting at my internship with a non for profit organisation called the 'Rotary club' who every year do a fundraiser called 'Ramble'. Ramble is a charity that is run every year in October, with a mix of the amazing race and treasure hunt, teams are formed and the aim of the game is to answer questions while trying to find clues around Perth CBD. The fundraiser goes to telethon and other very meaningful charities.

Yesterday i Had the pleasure of meeting some of the people from the Ramble organisation. Myself and Rhian who is also doing the internship with me, got to sit and discuses how we were going make ramble more appealing to students at Curtin University and the general public. It was such a great feeling as i felt like i was part of the team, throwing ideas and answering questions, it made me have a fresh air of motivation to help this organisation really shine to its full potential.

The meeting duration went for 1 and a half hours, within that time Rhian and I gathered some great ideas and suggestions to start working on. We will be meeting tomorrow (30th August) to come up with a timeline and start planing how and what we are going to do to create awareness around Curtin students.

Next week we will be going to another meeting where we will be meeting other people that are also involved with Ramble. We will also be presenting what we have discussed and what moves we are going to do for the Ramble.

Stay tuned, very exciting stuff are coming up!

Experiencing the other side of the RAC office.

Even though the RAC office is no stranger in terms of atmosphere as I work there on a casual basis, my first day still gave me the nerves; I was really excited.
Danielle and Chloe who both work for the Roadside Assistance division greeted me at 8:30am at the Joondalup office. Danielle is a Product and Marketing manager, and Chloe is a Marketing assistant. I sat on John’s desk, the Executive Motoring and Marketing Manager who accepted my internship, logged on and received files from Danielle. These files were to familiarize and prepare myself for my first meeting. Danielle had me read two marketing plans; One was the 2013 marketing plan, and the second was the final draft for 2014. These were in the form of PowerPoint slides, and each consisted of approximately 140 pages. The meeting only had myself, Danielle and Chloe. It went on for two hours, and it gave me the insight on how Roadside Assistance was going in terms of performance, and what plans the team had for the next financial year.

After the meeting, I was given my first project by Chloe. The RAC 10 years ago had installed patrolman meeting point signs at shopping centre, universities and hospitals to assist the process of finding where the member is at these places. However, as the RAC had undergone a rebrand, and because they no longer utilize the signs as they found it much more sufficient to meet members at their cars. My job was to find both the email and telephone details of these places. The folder consisted just over 100 shopping centres, hospitals and universities with the signs locations. By the end of the day I had all the information needed typed up on the excel spread sheet ready for me to get in contact with. Chloe and I typed up an email explaining what we wished for them to do and why. The places I was not able to get an email for were going to be contacted via telephone at a later date.  Funny enough, my first reply was from a gentleman who was quite direct in terms of if they were going to remove the signs it would be at our (RAC) expense. At this point, I knew this task was going to be interesting. -Watch this space.

Upon my second day, I was still as nervous as the first day as I was still getting my head around everything, however, the difference being I was slightly more prepared as I had an insight of how the department functions. My second project handed to me was by Anna, Marketing assistant for Driving and Auto service centres. This project is called the ‘Competitors analysis’ as it consisted of finding information about seven close competitors to the RAC Auto service centre: Number of locations, services, complimentary services and website notes to say the least. The second part of the project was to get in contact with these competitors, three suburbs from each company, and ask for quotes in regards to three vehicles - I found his quite fun. The quotes are then put into an excel spread sheet, similar to ones used for previous competitor analysis’s. The third step is to get an average price for each company. This is the step I am currently on and I could already note that the results are quite interesting. The final step for the competitor analysis is to write out a report, this will highlight key attractions that maybe used by the RAC.

In between these two ongoing projects, I was given small tasks to do in case I wanted a break from them for a tad. These included: Organising the storage room where flyers are kept, looking through pictures on getty.com for the use of a free2go campaign and organising envelopes containing Auto service Vouchers.

I then was invited to the Marketing teams monthly team meeting, this was a tad daunting as I had only met a select number of the team prior to it. The meeting was quite interesting, lasted two hours as it covered several topics such as health and safety, issues they had, progress in projects and a guest speaker from the branding team joined to introduce and explain the new campaign they have implemented. We did a small activity where we were handed a blank sheet of paper, had to close our eyes and get instructions. At the end of the instructions what we should have had was a paper aeroplane, what I had was anything but that. We then had a competition on who was able to throw theirs the furthest. This was really enjoyable as there were laughs and I got a feel of everybody’s personality. At that point, I knew I was going to enjoy my internship with them.

In a nut shell, these two days were full on, but surely something I was looking forward to experiencing.

Nuha.

Public Relations Internship Helps Me on Path to Public Relations Career

Hi everyone! This is my last blog post for Public Relations Internship 393. In my last blog post I am going to summarize the lessons gained from my internship at Edelman Kuala Lumpur.

In the first week of my internship, I did an induction programme which introduced me to public relations practices, the company, rules and regulations of the company, and ethical practices at the workplace.

After two weeks of my internship, I started to do media monitoring every morning once I arrived at the office. I had to update my supervisor regarding news related to the clients that the consumer team is working for. I like doing media monitoring because it could enhance my interests in reading newspaper and widen my knowledge on current issues.

Besides, I also learned how to calculate PR value. The formula used to calculate the PR value of an article is as follows:

Article’s Height x Article’s Width (columns) x  Casual Rate + Color Cost = Advertising Value Equivalents (AVEs)
AVEs x 3 = PR value

I used a book called Media Planning Guide Malaysia 2013 while calculating the PR value of an article. The columns, casual rate, and colour rate are derived from this book.

On the other hand, I also learned how to calculate the blog and Tweeter level. In order to calculate the blog level, we use a tool called BlogLevel. We use TweetLevel to calculate the Twitter level.

For more information about BlogLevel, please visit: http://bloglevel.edelman.com/

For more information about TweetLevel, please visit: http://tweetlevel.edelman.com/

I also came across a news monitoring company called News & Ads Monitoring Agency (nama) which offers complete coverage of top media outlets in Malaysia. My company is engaged with this agency in order to get the latest news updates of our clients.

For more information about nama, please visit: http://www.namaasia.com/

Moreover, I helped my team in doing monthly news reports for our clients. I did monthly reports for UNIQLO and Danone Dumex. For UNIQLO, I was required to compile monthly news reports regarding the company in order to evaluate the total stories covered by different media and to determine the total PR value generated throughout the month. For Danone Dumex it is different. I was required to compile monthly reports regarding the company itself and its competitors. PR monthly reports are important because they evaluate our clients media coverage and determine the total PR value of the news stories regarding our clients and their competitors. The report must be submitted to my supervisor at the end of the month for a review.

It was interesting to learn how to calculate PR value and do monthly news reports for our clients. As a PR practitioner, it is important to know how to prepare monthly reports for clients. Different clients demand for different things. Some clients they require us to prepare weekly reports while some they require monthly reports.

Every once or twice a month, my company will have online meetings with the leaders and staffs from different offices around the world. It was a good opportunity for me to experience how the leaders and employees interact and exchange thoughts among themselves.

As mentioned in my earlier blog post, I have learned how to make media calls and do media drops to different media outlets. I also went to our clients’ events with the team. All of these allowed me to learn how a Public Relations practitioner should do to interact and build relationships with the media. It also improved my interaction skills.

Working in this big company was really a real life challenging experience for me. The company is too fast pace and working hours are not predictable. Most of the time I had to work overtime. It was my first time working overtime and it was a challenge for me. I had to be able to manage my time wisely and strategically. However, this challenge could instill my discipline and train me to be more patient.

I have learned about the importance of culture in multinational companies in PR International unit in university. My company consists of employees from different cultures. I found it interesting but challenging to communicate and build relationships with colleagues from different cultures. During my internship, I have gained knowledge on how to detect and deal with relevant cultural differences. I also learned how to adapt to different cultures for more effective personal and business interactions.

Another knowledge that I have gained is that the success of a project relies on the team. Therefore, it is very important to be friend with one another, share experiences, exchange ideas, and work on the projects together. During my internship, I took part in brainstorming sessions with my team. From the brainstorming sessions, I have learned how to improve my communication skills and level of adaptability. I also became more confident in offering ideas and not to be shy in asking questions as well as develop creative thinking skills.

After this three-month internship at Edelman Kuala Lumpur, I have gained robust experience and found my passion in public relations. I have gained relevant, hands-on-experience, confidence, and professionalism. The internship also encouraged me to see each challenge as a prospect for learning and not allowing my mistakes to diminish my confidence. I have also learned about the importance of being pro-active in the workplace.

It was a real eye opening experience to do my internship with this public relations firm. It was the most memorable experience in my life. There are always ups and downs during an internship, but those are part of learning process.

It is understood that internships do not promise full time jobs. However, internships are very advantageous as they help you to have a better understanding of who you are, your strengths, your weaknesses where you need to improve and the type of management styles that are suitable for you. Internships also help you to learn on multiple levels and lead you down a certain career path and they are meant to give students transferable skills, knowledge and larger professional networks.

Last but not the least, I would like to thank Curtin University for giving Public Relations students a chance to do internships. It is really a good opportunity for students to learn and improve. I was so lucky to have the opportunity to do my internship at the world's top PR firm. I hope what I have shared with you can encourage you to do internships. Trust me, after internships you will improve yourself in different areas.

Thank you for reading and giving comments. Good luck to all of you and be strong whenever you face any challenges in your internship.
