So it's almost the end of the internship, and really enriching journey. I must say that I have learnt a lot through this experience and definitely am looking forward to learn even more, where ever my next stage of life brings me. That being said, I think I feel very proud to be a Curtin PR student. Being matched up with PR students from other educational institutes, I feel that Curtin really prepares its students well.
One of the biggest takeaways I feel that gained through this is the importance of remaining useful a relevant. Specifically in my generation, there seems to be a change in mindset for people entering the workforce - the main difference being "What I can do for the company" vs. "What can the company do for me". From the number of days of leaves, to extra benefits, to break times and quality of pantries, it really seemed very much like a selfish decision as to why they choose to work in a company. The former mindset, however, is really about how one, as a person, can add value to the organisation he or she is working for.
I will have to admit that initially, going into an internship, I did have the previous mindset, thinking about how much money I could earn, and whether I could take leave (which obviously was not possible in an internship), and trying my best to find shortcuts to get a way with doing too much work. As I went through my internship, I realized that working, or in fact life itself, is never about yourself. It's about how useful you can be to others. After that realization, I felt like the entire world around me changed. It was pretty darn awesome.
To be honest, I'm not exactly sure how relevant this post is to the internship, but what I know is that this is something that is meaningful to me. Just wondering, anyone out that share similar revelations?

It's over. Do you think they will notice if I don't go and just stay there?
So my internship has come to an end, in my final week I tied up loose ends and did a few odd jobs for some consultants.
This has been an amazing experience that I will never forget and has given me such a great insight into how a public relations firm works. I was sad to say goodbye to everyone and can't believe just how quickly the past four weeks has dlown by, it seems like only yesterday that I first stepped foot into the building and was greeted by so many new faces.
For my last day I baked everyone some cupcakes and macarons to say thank you for helping me out over the last four weeks and for teaching me so many new skills and expanding my knowledge base.
I'm finishing my internship with the knowledge that I have definitely chosen the right career path and cannot wait to graduate from university and begin the rest of my working life as a consultant in a public relations firms.
I hope everyone had an experience as good as mine and good luck to those who are only just starting their internships!!!

This is not the end, it is all slowly beginning
As the end came for my internship, I took time to reflect on the last three months about how working at Communicare had set in stone that doing PR was one of the best decisions I ever made personally.
The 8:30 starts and driving through traffic for another day at staring at a computer may not sound so appealing and great but I came to enjoy it. The different skills I had learnt through the course of my degree, were being put in play and having done countless assignments for non- for profit organisations, the knowledge that I had gained was helping me.
My internship thought me to be organised, on time and to double triple check everything to ensure everything is perfect and also there is nothing wrong with asking for a third or fourth opinion. At Communicare, the organisation services about seven different sectors, and they are all dependent on the marketing and media team, to get the word out there about the different events that are happening for them. I was thoroughly impressed how organised the team was, in ensuring they got all the right information out there at all times and on time.
I am grateful for Aimee (who is no longer at the organisation) for giving me this opportunity, to develop my skills further, to allow me to reassure myself, I have made the right decision in choosing to study PR , when some around me doubted it was not really a real degree.
Now that it has come to an end, and I am writing my final report, each day I think to myself, yes I can be a PR practitioner and though it may not always be easy, I will enjoy it at the end of the day. Now to just get a job!
This is not the end, it is all slowly beginning.

The End is Upon Us
On my last day at Linc my supervisors and colleagues took me out for lunch and drinks(!) on the company credit card. Discussion about the payment led to an interesting conversation about an upcoming initiative of the PR team. It will involve targeting prominent editors and journalists and taking them out for, lunch or drinks (whatever is deemed appropriate) in order to 'build relationships' with them.
This is all to be done on the company credit card. Apparently this is just good practice for PR practitioners in order to maintain good relationships. The research I've done on the topic has revealed as much - journalists are not as opposed to relationships with PR people as they portray. They can't afford to be when 40% of their news content is generated by practitioners! But while they are quite open to a good relationship, they firmly believe that it is up to the PR practitioner to maintain the relationship.. And it would seem Linc is quite aware of this contradiction and mean to capitalize on it!
So there you have it - my last story for this blog and for this unit. The semester is nearly done with. Exams are upon us. The final report nearly completed. The internship all but over. All that remains is the reflection.
My experience at Linc was... eye-opening. I'm not sure I want to work in consultancy or even in PR anymore. But the experience was an interesting one and I'll definitely be taking away plenty of skills and a great addition to my resume.
I hope everyone else had a great time at their placement.. All the best into the future!

I would personally favour drinks...
