An end to a terrific few months

Today I completed my final day of work experience at City of Joondalup and the time has really flown by, I can’t believe it has already come to an end. It feels like the time I’ve spent here has been so brief yet so valuable in teaching me about the industry I’m about to enter in the following year.

I have left City of Joondalup with a sound knowledge of how to write goals and strategies for a public relations plan, a social media strategy, media releases and columns for City publications.

The highlights of my placement were;

-       Researching potential names for one of the City of Joondalup staff meeting rooms and having one of my own suggestions be submitted to the Mayor for consideration.

-       Researching how other local governments and businesses celebrate NAIDOC Week and making suggestions for what the City can do to increase attendance and get the Joondalup community more involved in next years events.

-       Putting years of writing media releases and advertising material into practise by writing to promote Joondalup events and the city itself for City of Joondalup publications and paid newspaper advertisements

-       Learning about the City’s social media strategies and what they are doing to develop their online presence and become more interactive.

-       Performing competitor analysis’s for the City to see how other governments brand themselves and how effective this is, to determine whether any improvements could be made to Joondalups branding to better communicate key messages to the public.

I learnt a great deal over the past months and what I learnt in the workplace I will take with me when I get my first job in public relations. This experience has given me the confidence I could never get from the classroom.
Not only did I learn a lot when I was working on my own, I also learnt that there are many days in the world of PR where things do not go according to plan! On my last day the City’s Rates Draw was being held that night, where the City gives out prizes to residents that have paid their rates ahead of time as a way to reward ratepayers and encourage people to make their payments early. This saw many of us in the office come together in a rush to ensure everything was ready for the night, right down to decorations for the venue and nametags!

It’s been a great experience and I’m a little sad to leave, but now I’m more excited than ever to begin my own journey in the world of PR! Thanks for reading everybody.

My final week as a student

This will be my fourth and final blog and it feels like just yesterday I was searching for my placement. In this blog I will reflect on my internship and also point out the main things I have taken away. This placement opportunity has been a wonderful experience for me, in both learning and experiencing everything Public Relations has to offer. I have been able to fine tune the basic skills that are needed to work in the PR field. I have also had the opportunity to enrich my own personal knowledge about being in a practical field. I have learnt to differentiate between what I learnt at University and PR practiced in the real workplace, this has been very beneficial.

I will now be able to take away everything I have learnt and put it to practice in my next working adventure, I feel the most important thing I have experienced is my new found appreciation for what public relation can offer any organisation. When companies underestimate what PR can do for them they miss out on vital opportunities that could benefit them. I found this especially important in building a brand,  a brand can be see as the perceptions of consumers and its importance to any organisation, as it can make or break the success of a business.

Also PR can help the company build and maintain their relationship with their stakeholders, I understood the importance of having a good relationship with not just the public but also the internal and external stakeholders, it is important in building a brand that is known and trusted to continue being successful. Public Relation can offer any organisation so much opportunity and throughout my internship I have really experienced this first hand, the main thing I have realised is how interested I am about Public Relations. I am seeing the possibilities within any organisation, I am excited to graduate from Curtin University and begin the rest of my career, hopefully in a public relations field.

An Industry VIP Event – it’s not all about champagne and parties!

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to my second blog post! Well after traveling in my last blog, I arrived to work and got straight back into it again! Although no leases have been signed as yet for the upcoming showroom, the owner wants me to start organizing the VIP Opening night for the potential showroom in order to generate awareness among our clientele within the industry and to promote Pacific Blue furniture’s brand image of quality, luxury and prestige.

At first I found myself getting carried away with elaborate and fun ideas such as champagne on arrival, showroom layout and designer invitations. So as I began to feel a little overwhelmed I referred back to the various concepts and processes I have learnt throughout my degree in regards to event planning allowing me to take one step at a time.

For the first few days back at work my time was largely spent on the computer coming up with a client database. As I am not use to using excel, I was taught various skills, which made the process much easier! I firstly made a spreadsheet of all builders, architects, interior designers in the local area who are potential clients for the business. The rest of the week was non-stop contributing towards budgets, scheduling and organizing promotional material.

My favourite part of organizing the event to date has been coercing with the graphic designer for promotional material to use at the event such as VIP cards, bags and invitations. Below is a proof of our VIP card which I helped design to give all attendees entitling repeat industry VIP's 20% off our products, this is also apart of Pacific Blue’s loyalty program.

As the majority of my time has been spent on the computer researching and crunching numbers I would have to agree with Carolyn Verey when she mentioned that “Unfortunately PR is not about cocktail parties and lunches”.
Nonetheless, I have really enjoyed doing something different and employing the concepts I have learnt throughout my degree. I’m now looking forward to the event going ahead!

Until next time,

Courtney
