Guarding the Hansgrohe Green Initiative from Green-washing Risk – Post 4

As a manufacturer for bathroom fittings, the Hansgrohe “green” initiative naturally has something to do with prudent water consumption. In line with the Water Efficiency Labeling Scheme (WELS) spearheaded by the Public Utilities Board (PUB) of Singapore, we are going to inform or rather remind our key stakeholders about the green in our logo. It is going to be an integrated communications project where we will be working on a brochure, an event and a seminar.

When we touch on the “green” topic nowadays, there is danger in being a culprit of green-washing. With a strong ethical conscience, I find myself a constant reminder for my work mates to steer clear of any spin or the slightest bit of exaggeration in our stories, in case we stray too far. To do this in Hansgrohe is not a chore at all as it is a top-down culture from my director himself. We have been ethical in the things we do and that makes me feel good as an employee, since I do not have to cover up or cook up stories to make the company look good.

The ethics topic is something that we have discussed in the degree programme extensively, regardless of whether it is a marketing module, a management module or a PR module. I suppose this is education and education is a vital function in any civilisation. When someone receives a good education, we not only expect that person to be knowledgeable, but also to be civilised and ethical.

In this company, I am proud to say that I get to see how good ethics is being lived out. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage my peers that it is possible to find good companies out there and “business ethics” or “PR ethics” is definitely not an oxymoron.

Axor Urquiola Product Launch at Hansgrohe – Post 3

Everybody at Hansgrohe breathed a huge sigh of relief as the Axor Urquiola launch comes to an end. Something that we have all worked hard for over the past six months was finally coming to an end.

Event management is truly tiring! Behind all the fun and glam lies the dirty mundane work that nobody likes to do- things like arranging furniture, clearing rubbish, carrying the heavy goodie bags from one place to another, ensuring that the transport for VIPs come on time and staying back to wait for the contractors to dismantle the backdrops and props while everyone else packs their bags and go; all these are things which me and the PR team have to do.

I am thankful that at least the most dreadful post-event task - entering name card details of the guests into our database – was already taken care of by another colleague.

Although it was yet another successful event, I feel that there were many things which we could have done better… Things like preparing and anticipating questions for the media interviews, training and briefing all colleagues involved in the event and sending out thank you notes; all these are things which we have failed to do. But in a real life situation where we have limited time and resources, I think we have prioritised our work rather well. To be fair towards our diligent team, I would like to see these undone tasks as “room for improvement” for our next event!

Hansgrohe Annual Golf Event – Post 2

We had our annual “Hansgrohe Golf Invitational 2009” on 18 August 09 and this is one event that we have always asked The Peak Singapore Magazine to organize, year after year. The reason is because The Peak has a strong base of faithful readers who are above average income earners, with about 43% earning in excess of US$200,000 per annum. Most of them are professionals in senior management positions and this perfectly matches the profile of our clientele base.

Even though Hansgrohe Singapore usually organizes its own events, the annual golf event remained under the care of The Peak Magazine, despite the fact that all the event management ladies at The Peak had left and were replaced with new blood.

I used to think that event organizers are people with the most experience in a particular sort of event and in this case, a golf event, which means a golf event organizer would be some golf expert who have rich experience in golf and be the most familiar with requirements such as green fees, handicap, grouping of the flights and all the rest of the golf jargon which I have yet to muster. But apparently, this may not (just) be the case.

In our partnership with The Peak, the best value that they brought us is probably not their expertise in handling golf events, but their ability to obtain good sponsors such as Jaguar (who sponsored a prestigious car for the hole-in-one prize), their handling of our RSVP (which took a huge load of manual work off our lean team) and most importantly, their branding, which is on par with ours.

Even though nobody won the big hole-in-one prize, the golf event was nevertheless a huge success and we were already talking about next year’s event. This annual event (even though costs a lot) is certainly a good platform for us to keep pace and contact with our VVIPs.

Internship with Hansgrohe Singapore - Post 1

My PR internship is with the Marketing and PR Department at Hansgrohe Singapore, where I work full time as a Trainer & Aquademie Manager. Hansgrohe is a German-based leading manufacturer for bathroom fittings; Aquademie means "Water Academy", a place where we conduct trainings for our dealers and potential corporate customers such as residential and hotel developers, architects & designers. It also serves as a retail boutique since it is strategically located along Mohamed Sultan Road, where a lot of premium condominiums are situated too.

My job scope as an Aquademie Manager requires me to perform some PR roles such as conducting Aquademie tours for non-retail visitors and also participating in the organisation and hosting of the company's events on a project-to-project basis. As such, I am already working very closely with the Marketing & PR Department. For the purpose of this PR internship programme, I initiated certain add-on PR duties to my current job scope, also to help out my colleagues in the Marketing & PR Department, who were heavily loaded with all the marketing work required by our business region in the Far East (Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Vietnam and Cambodia).

This internship programme comes at a very exciting and "eventful" period of the year where we have a lot of PR happenings, there is our Annual Golf Invitational Event in August, the Axor Urquiola Product Launch in September and our inaugural Green event in December.

In the upcoming posts, I will be sharing my experience in these 3 projects. Although they are all events primarily, they are angled very differently with unique objectives and messages.

Stay tuned!
