What’s good on the inside shows on the outside

Quite frequently (approx. twice a week, in fact) the Guest Relations department have their regular motivational sessions at the meeting room nearby my department. These meetings would include mini-prizes, motivational talks, etc. They’re probably more flamboyant than we are; and I thought the communications department was the noisiest.

If we remember our lessons on the importance of internal relations as a part of PR, this company acknowledges the importance of raising employee morale through so many methods. For instance, I’m very much allowed to come to work in my hoodie, jeans, and sneakers because there’s no mandatory dress code that says you have to dress like you’re going to a job interview (unless you’re attending a formal event).
So you can imagine I looked quite odd on my first day of work but managed to adapt by day 2.

Companies that work closely with customers will deal with all kinds of clients and users. This includes having to handle the daily stresses of being yelled at, complained to, demanded of impossible things, etc. But, as the saying goes, “The customer is always right”.

Do you think regular motivational activities increase productivity?
Does comfort and casual dressing make work more fun?

Revolutions as Solutions

One thing I’ve definitely learnt is how much new media is both a friend and a foe to any major organization that gets media attention.

As my boss explained to me, bloggers have a vast following; you get one to support your company, you get the rest of them.

Also, it seems major organizations are really getting into the kick of utilizing websites like Facebook and Twitter. Our own Prime Minister has a facebook page (but he’s yet to accept my friend invite. heheh); and the CEO of my interning-company has a twitter. I know this because the local news networks used one of his tweets as a quote in a recent news article.

If you think about it, especially those who study Journalism…
Will we have to start using Twitter, Facebook, and Blogs as a credible source in the future?
And from a PR point of view…
media monitoring, it seems, gets more complicated because erroneous statements aren’t just via word-of-mouth anymore. What do you think?

*P.S. this is not a Tweet

The word “Organisation” has pun intended

If it’s one thing we learnt in class, it is the fact that last minute work will end up rushed and not the best that has ever been accomplished. After all, failing to plan = planning to fail (or something like that)

So I just about nearly died when my subordinates asked me to find a minimum of 30 professional dancers who are willing to get paid below their usual salary to perform phenomenally within 6 days; this includes the ½ ended day in which this task was given to me.
Like any PR technician, I had to make miracles happen.
I’m now down by 1 day with 4 & ¼ to go. The word “sleep” has officially evicted itself from my mental-dictionary. Even Professor Oxford and Captain Webster can’t save me now.

In PR, your job is one big website with COUNTLESS pop-ups you can’t click “close” to.

You’d think I don’t have time to write this under such circumstances…
Well, every second I spend writing this, I am waiting with my neck on the line for dancers to call me and say “I’ll take it! Consider the jiggy shindig job done!”. I hope they lied when they said a watched phone doesn’t ring.
Longest 9-6 day ever since I started this job.

please do comment with your stories like this too!

let's hope I survive this

Of a man named Ally

Like any average human being with emotional attachment; I have a crush on a TV star.

One of my tasks for my 1st week at work consists of the dog-like work of sorting company contacts. A bit like combining Media Connections + the R&R assignment of an info bank.

It should be to no one’s surprise that I’d stumble across big names; producers, executives, etc. But to stumble across a TV crush? Now there’s a question of work ethics. Instinct, primordial lust, and illogical thought says “save that number, email, etc. and stalk the daylights out of that hot piece of meat.” But that would very much go against working ethics in general.

I would say it’s a bit like living in Hollywood, and knowing the address to Brad Pitt’s personal apartment. You COULD break in and steal his undergarments; but that would be unethical of you. Not to mention illegal, and uncouth.

So, needless to say…I will not stalk the incredibly adorable tv-presenter. I won’t even Facebook him (now that I know his full name). I typed his data down, and put his card away.

I did the right thing…right?
