Half Way to the Finish Line!

I am about to start Day 11 at Momentum Forum Events. This marks the half way mark of my PR Placement and I believe a I good time to reflect on my journey so far.

I have found my experience at Momentum very educational, but also very enjoyable. There have been a few moments where I have had show confidence that I didn't know I had, and others where I have felt very sure of myself and my capabilities.

During my time at Momentum I have been working on the "Perth Pet Expo" which will be held on Nov 7th and 8th of this year. The expo was first held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition centre last year and was host to approximately 3000 local pet lovers that enjoyed a variety of exhibitors products and services.

My job, has been to research, email, and call potential exhibitors for this years expo. This involves sorting through a list of 750 businesses, emailing them with a media kit, and following up with a phone call to see if they are interested in participating this year. As you can imagine, with a list of 750 businesses this is very tedious work!

Here you can see a glimpse of the list and the system we have developed to keep track of who has been called/emailed and who needs following up.

The challenging part, has been trying to 'sell' the expo to business owners, in front of the whole office, with everyone listening to what I'm saying. I am usually quite good at putting on a brave face and getting the job done, but I found calling people so scary and intimidating that I tried so hard to avoid the next call!

Although I have found this task, tedious, challenging, and really scary. I know that it has helped me to develop my communication skills, I have learnt how to interact with different characters and how to to 'read' someone by a phone call. I can tell straight away how I need to approach the conversation depending on how they answer the phone, whether I need to be casual, formal, polite or forward in order to get the outcome I want. I think this is a good skill to have for public relations, I need to be able to liaise with clients, the media, and the public to reach the outcome that I want and so I hope my this experience can help me to do so in the future.

That's all from me today! Until next time!
