I thought it would be good to summarise the last twenty days and give a overview of how my perspectives have changed. I am sure that this is one of the key aspects that this unit aims to achieve. Really giving us the opportunities to delve into real like scenarios, use our years of theory and see if we float or drown.
1) I thought PR was only for women. I guess my previous expectations are generally true. It is a profession whereby I think most females are attracted because of the creativity involved in the processes. I sometimes compare my work with theirs - and i'm completely baffled at the attention to detail and creativity..GENETICS? I hope so! After doing prac, it was clear that there are a small amount of males in the industry - though dominant in the journalists side of the court, it is still all connected at the end of the day. I learnt last yr that journalists are the key to the pr practitioners success and how true this is - when the angle is all about influencing the general public!
2) I guess my next generalisation about PR was that it was a job anyone could do. AGAIN, HOW WRONG I WAS. Such experience, talent, skills and abilities, theory and alike go into planning everything from a media release to a fundraising proposal. I guess its paid of going to Uni then!!
3) My last big generalisation was that its not something one can do as a profession simply because of the pay. After asking some questions about this, it seems the pay has gone up in the industry to around 45-55k.. I still feel that if I was to support a family in later life, this may not be sufficient. The only problem is: I really enjoy it now! money vs happiness... i think ill take the later!!
OVER AND OUT FOR THE SEMESTER!
Welcome to PR Internship - YOUR opportunity to put everything you have learned over the past years at university into practice and to get a thorough insight into what public relations is like "in the real world". This Blog allows you to reflect on your experiences, share insights with other students across campuses and to possibly give advice and support to fellow students. Please also see http://printernship-reflections.blogspot.com.au/ for more reflections
