The Hectic Period...

Hello again fellow PR393 students,

Thus far, my internship with angelhands Inc is starting to get hectic! Since I am basically managing the whole 50K in 50 Days 2012 campaign, there are lots of things I need to get done before the event launches.

For example, some duties would be:
·      Complying a list of potential corporate clients
·      A generic email & thank-you letters for these corporate clients
·      Online media (i.e. facebook updates, youtube promotional video, twitter updates)
·      Include news about campaign in newsletter for angelhands members
·      Press releases
And many other tasks included in a timeline & a campaign brief that I have typed up myself and reviewed by the board members.

Most of all these tasks have to be accomplish before the launch date : November 5, 2012.

As for now, things seem to be going slow but smoothly and there are still lots to do. I hope with the task/timeline list that I have compiled, the backbone of setting up the campaign, will help me along the way to achieving the goal of the launch date that have been set.

On another note, about 2 weeks ago, as angelhands Inc have just recently moved into their new office, the community news reporters came to talk to my supervisor about how things were getting along since they moved. This let to a photo taking session to be included in the paper and me plus a few other 2 other volunteers on that day was asked to joined in the picture. Well I wasn’t really hoping to actually catch a glimpse of that article but my friends did and here it is! How exciting! I’m actually in the paper. :D

Thought I share that with all of you hehe.

Thanks for reading & I hope by the last blog entry, I could say I have completed quite a few tasks from above because it has been the biggest responsibility I’ve had at a work place and it would be quite satisfying if I do a good job; as this would also be good on my resume.

Till next time!

First few days! - PR Internship at the Heart Foundation

Hi all,

I am a commerce student majoring in PR and will graduate this year.

So far I have worked a total of six days here at the Heart Foundation located in Subiaco and I am enjoying the challenges and tasks that are coming my way. I have decided to write about the first four days in this blog to keep each blog individual and a little more interesting.

The Heart Foundation was established in 1959 with the goal of aiding cardiovascular research, supporting health professionals, developing promotional activities and assisting those affected by heart disease. The Heart Foundation is a not for profit organisation and heavily relies of the generously of corporate sponsors, the public and the government.

Most people are familiar with past campaigns, however the majority of people recognise the Heart Foundation tick often located on cereals, spreads, certain meats and other grocery goods.

It certainly is a game changer joining the ‘real world’, firstly you dress the part (no more casual dress and messy hair), its now elegant suits, silk ties, cuff links and superior grooming. The office atmosphere is certainly something strange yet interesting at the same time. Here at the Foundation you have your own typical office cubical with all the office amenities shining under bright lights.

My first few days were quite busy with many things to quickly learn such as using the network drives, using outlook, working out the cisco phone and building an excel database for the current 2012 Door-Knock campaign. Overall things are much more settled and productive now.

I shall leave it there for my first blog entry, next blog will discuss the Door-Knock campaign and the work I have been doing.

PS: Does anybody find parking in Subiaco ridiculously hard and strict?

Talk to you guys later, Miles.

It's only fun if you want it to be

Hey again everyone!

It has just past day 7 of my internship at The Global Good Foundation and I am absolutely enjoying it. Since the first week, I've gotten follow ups from interviews and I'm on to constructing a press release alongside getting primary schools from Rockingham and Freo to join in our Minute Of Noise campaign which will begin in the next semester.

The Global Good Foundation is currently planning up a camp that will be taking place in April. It's a 4 day 3 night camp planned with jammed packed fun activities for children who have been affected by domestic violence. The response has been far better than we all expected! It's so good that Tanya had to come up with a waiting list as all the spots have been filled up.
The camp's are going to be great. I'm honestly excited. Tanya has a whole range of activities planned out for the kids that will help them in self esteem building, teamwork and learning to trust.

Last week on Monday, my supervisor Tanya told my colleague Danielle, Global Good volunteer Kennah and I to come in our best camp gear as there was a photographer coming. We headed to camp site to scout for activity locations, speak to the care taker and to mostly check out the facilities available. The Kwinana Courier's photographer Neil greeted us upon arriving and began taking photos of the three of us. The article was pieced together and appeared on last Friday's edition of the Kwinana Courier! It was definitely a fun day out of the office.

From what I've learnt so far is that PR isn't just about media releases or making checklists for events. There are so many different areas of PR you can touch on. I've been having the most fun at my internship doing interviews, invitations, doing rsvp for events and communicating with principals or schools and counsel members I never thought I would.

It's already coming to the end end of week 6.
We're all half way through the semester! I hope everyone of you are enjoying your placements and don't forget to make the most out of it. Have a great weekend and semester break!

I'll definitely update soon.

All for the Global Good

Hey everyone!

I just started my internship at The Global Good Foundation last Monday on the 19th. The Global Good Foundation is a not for profit organization specializing in providing a voice for children who are involved in domestic violence. The foundation has a whole array of activities lined up for both children and parents who want to get involved. For instance, there is an ongoing campaign called "One Minute of Noise". It educates children about the tell tale signs of domestic violence and letting them know its okay to speak out. The foundation travels to schools conducting talks and after that, they let the kids make a whole minute of noise! You can imagine the banging, screaming, stomping of feet and how loud it gets. Its' somehow become a competition among schools on who can truly be the loudest. The Foundation does incredible work with children getting them to not only understand what domestic violence is about but also to encourages them to be free spirited people. The camps focus on team work, self confidence and many other positive traits, it is no wonder many children benefit from such camps.

Just on my first day, I realized that my doubts of worrying about how grueling and almost terrible my internship would be vanished! My supervisor is an amazing person, assigning me with tasks and carefully guiding me towards producing quality work. So far I'm working on two interviews for press releases, an information sheet and a brochure for the general public. There's an upcoming event called Jump for GGF. It's actually jumping off a plane at 8,000ft to help children recognize and signify that it's okay to take a leap of faith. Even parents are doing it! It will cost you $500 to jump so if you're interested please do come and support us. We'd be happy to have you.

To summarize, I honestly learnt a lot on my first day and I can't wait to see what else is in stored. I'm hoping to possibly pursue a career in PR after my studies so I know that this is a great opportunity for me to learn all about trade.
On another note, I hope everyone else is going on well with their internships. It's already week 4 of the semester, let's all push forward and persevere! Stay positive.

Till next time, take care!

Blogging for the Global Good; Workload Fluctuations

Hi everyone,

As the semester is coming to an end, so is my placement at The Global Good Foundation (GGF). I am completing my placement part time (now from Melbourne), and am expecting to finish within the next ten days.

As mentioned in a previous Blog, GGF is a not for profit organisation. Now the thing I've noticed with GGF and have picked up from other students working for NFP's, is that there is either nothing to do... or everything!

For example about six weeks ago I decided to move from Perth to Melbourne. Now two weeks before I left I had full time availability to work on tasks for GGF. Over this period there was literally no work sent through to me.. even when i asked for some! We had just had two more work experience students come on board, and were really on top of things.

Unfortunately for me things did pick up.. just as I landed in Melbourne and began house hunting! I did not have the internet for my first week in my new city, and when I was able to log in from internet cafes my inbox was swamped with requests from GGF.

Now 80% of the way through my placement I am more on top of things. But of course there is still a lot of work to do.. just as i'm working frantically on the final report!
