You Can’t Help Them All

I have some sad news today.

For those that have read my previous blogpost, I Saw You in the Newspaper! , there has been some development in the case of RumahAmpik. To recap, in my previous post I mentioned that our Corporate Communications office was contacted by a man called Mr. William concerning including his children into our After School Project (ASP).

Today, after a meeting with one of our board of directors, it was decided that RumahAmpik, at this time, is not a feasible community to foster due to the need for trained mentors with more experiences in dealing with problematic children as well as the fact that we have three other communities in our care.

I had suspected for a while that this would be the outcome of the case, but it does not change the sadness in my heart. Perhaps when the ASP is more established, and the mentors more well trained or rather if ASP has the ability to train the mentors that are already dedicated to the project, we can attempt such a thing with RumahAmpik. Till then, RumahAmpik has to stand and face this alone.

This situation, however, has taught me a little something in balancing the good of the company with the good of the community. CSR is never the priority of an organization, it is simply an obligation they have to cater to in order to continue their businesses as they please. In our case, the ASP has never been a priority in time or funding from our organization. I understand that in this specific case, ASP was truly unequipped to handle more problematic children under its care, and had to cede the opportunity to a later date, if at all.

I maintain, however, that in fulfilling an organizations corporate social responsibility the end goal of doing ‘just enough’ just isn’t enough. One day, people will look back and realize a company has done the bare minimum for their community and then they will demand compensation. One day, that organization they will be forced to realize that while they can’t help them all, they can certainly try.

I Saw You in the Newspaper!

Good old traditional media!

Yesterday we were contacted by a man called William, to inform us that he had been observing the progress of the After School Project over the local newspapers and he wanted us to take the children of his longhouse (RumahAmpik) into our program!

The After School Project is an educational program where we ‘foster’ groups of children from the community and carry out various educational activities with them, to teach them that learning can be a fun and rewarding experience. We currently have three groups of children under our charge, which are the Kompleks Hamidah Yakub orphanage, Rumah Anak Amal Kesayangan Kami orphanage and the children of the nearby community in Kampung Wireless.

We were invited today Mr. William’s longhouse to meet with the village chief and his assistant and during our meeting they told us of the high dropout rate of their village, as well as the high marriage rate, especially of those under 18-years-old. These marriages were usually due to unplanned teen pregnancy and are legal in Malaysia, as the parents of the under-aged individuals gave their consent. Something Mr. William said really shocked me and made me realise that the After School Project and the education it brings really is important.

“Parents protect our children, saying ‘don’t scare them, let them be!’ but when they get older, they get wilder. They say ‘help them, but don’t scare them, let them be!’ and later when they’re young adults, they are set in their ways and cannot be changed. They are poor and will always be poor because they are uneducated, all they can do is mix cement and sit in guardhouses. They are poor, so they drink, which makes them more poor; this makes them sadder, so they drink some more. Their parents say ‘help them!’

How? It’s too late.”

Traditional media has a way of reaching the local communities that the internet can’t, not just because they might now have internet connections where they are but because there is something about an article in the newspaper that says something about an organisation’s reliability. Aside from that, it doesn’t take any effort or commitment to comment on a post on Facebook, but it takes a certain amount of conviction and investment in a situation to call a phone number on a newspaper article, talk to a receptionist and wait to be transferred before asking for help from a complete stranger.

Hopefully, after meeting with him and discussing the situation with him, we can help him and his people in the future.

Proud Intern

The event After School Project: Step by Step "Let us Preserve, Let us Give" was very successful. The only words to describe my feelings at the end of the event was relieved and proud. I am very happy that event went according as planned.

It is just an amazing feeling to be able to organised my own event in the company, especially being an intern. The trust that my manager had with us (other interns) was indescribable as she allowed us to take matters in our own hands.

A day before the event, myself and my colleagues alongside with the security guards arrived at the venue (Piasau Boat Club) to make sure the logistics and decorations were done in proper manner. The display board that I made was transported to the venue with the help of the security guards. As our office lies on the 5th floor, and the size of the display board being larger than the lift, we had to carry it down the stairs! Special thanks to Sarah Adiba (intern) who helps with this hard labour. We also had to hand out t shirts of the event to the children from different institutes. The children were very happy to receive their very own After School Project: Step by Step t shirt.

On the day of the event, the children from Kampung Wireless, Rumah Amal Anak Kesayangan Kami and also Kompleks Hamidah Yakub arrived by 7.30am, eagerly waiting for the event to start. We first had a speech by our manager, followed by the walk around Piasau Nature Reserve (to understand the history behind fighting for the reserve and reasons for preserving the reserve), Malaysian Nature Society's exhibition house and lastly, educational session by Zero Strays Miri and a pledge to love and care for animals using hand prints on a cloth.

I have learnt tremendously from organizing this event especially writing press releases, press advisory, making connections with the people of media. To me, it was important to follow up with the journalist regarding my event especially on the day of the event to cover our news. Some of the reporters have forgotten about the event but was happy to drop by once they were reminded. It delighted me to see our news being carried out in 7 media outlets (Borneo Post, Utusan Borneo, Sarawak Tribune, Utusan Sarawak, United Daily, See Hua Daily News and Sin Chew Daily News) as this shows the newsworthiness of the event.

Media clipping is another thing we had to do. Though I dislike purchasing newspapers for the media clipping (as I could not find them all in one place and sometimes it required 3 to 4 different place to get all the newspapers from all media outlets), it excites me to have found our news being carried out. It is such a wonderful feeling.

Things that I have learnt from organizing this event:
- Be organized
- Be on time
- Make note of important things to do in your diary
- Appointments are not to be missed
- Early planning is important to ensure the success of the event
- Knowing people helps ease the job
- Quotations for expenses are to be asked or done early
- Event flow are to be planned early
- Media releases for pre and after event are to be drafted early
- Be passionate about what you do!

I have attached a few pictures of the event below, please enjoy:

Building Muscles During My Internship!

Hi everyone,

A few weeks on to my internship now and all I can say is that "I LOVE IT'.
As mentioned in my previous post I love social work and my PR department focuses on corporate social responsibility.. What is better than to get paid to help people!

Updates on my event. So, my event is around the corner, in a couple of days. The name of the event is called The After School Project: Step by Step with a slogan of 'Let us Preserve, Let us Give". The aim of this event is to allow our target audience the orphans from 3 different institutes to  partake in this educational session. 116 orphans will be learning about preserving nature, giving back to society and how to care for animals.

The 2 organisations invited to participate in educating the children include: Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and Zero Strays Miri (ZSM).

Preparing for this event is hectic as this is the largest event our company is organising. Moreover, there are many other events going on during the same month.

TASK TO BE DONE IN ORDER TO PREPARE FOR THIS EVENT:

1) Detailed Public Relations Plan
(This includes contacting personnel from MNS and ZSM to set up a meet, several meetings, designing banners and flyers, budgeting, venue booking, catering, getting participants, participation forms, equipment rentals, transportation for the children, contacting volunteers and mentors etc).

2) Preperation of  press release to announce the event.

3) Faxing press advisory to invite journalist for the event.

4) Preperation of press release to be published after the event.

5) Preparing logistics needed for the event.

6) Designing and preparing a display board for Interhill's CSR Projects.
(This display board had me printing pictures, then cutting papers, after that laminating the pictures and cut them again. I never knew all these details are time consuming and extremely tiring but I enjoy doing them.

I must say that I am glad to have the knowledge on writing excellent press releases and PR plans as these are exactly what was thought in our PR units. What I love about PR is that all the techniques we learnt from our units at the university allows us to apply them in real working environment.

Attached below is a banner for my event, a group photo between Interhill Staff, MSN and ZSM for the press release and finally my display board (80% done).

That is it for now! Going to continue working on my event. Till next time!

It's Not What It Seems..You Have Got To Look Deeper..

Dear fellow PR Interns,

It has been a few weeks since I started my internship at Interhill Group, in a small oil town called Miri. It is located on the eastern part of Malaysia. Interhill Group, though they call themselves a property development company, it is actually involved in the timber trade.

I am an animal activist and an environmentalist. "So why are you working there?
This is the question I have been getting from the people around me.

I remember a wise PR lecturer once said, "if you do not agree with a company's way of business, why not go in and change it."

Those words were constantly juggling through my thoughts. The struggling decision to work with Interhill or not was something I then understood from what we have learnt in the PR units of making ethical decisions. The question was, do I work with them and protect the big corporate greed and bend my believes or work somewhere else. Here is a link to guide us PR practitioners into make the right decisions http://www.prsa.org/aboutprsa/ethics/#.VMrugWiUdmw

I then decided to research the company further to help me conclude my choices. Wonderful enough, I found that they have a CSR department, which is my area of interest. Most people would think that a large corporation having a CSR department, is just to cover up the ugly truth of their wrong doings. However, during my interview with the manager of this department, Agnes, she glows when she talks about helping the indigenous community of Sarawak (Penan Community, who are the last hunters and gatherers), the orphans, the wild life animals and more.

The projects Interhill group has initiated includes: The After School Project, which I am personally involved in, Local Community Support, Women Empowerment Programs and Education Initiative. All the above projects target the less privileged children such as orphans and also the rural indigenous communities.

Interhill Group also focuses on Women Empowerment which I personally worked on.

It is very evident that the CSR department leads the corporation and their involvement with the timber trade are strictly being bounded with ethical guidelines!

With that, I have decided to join the company. I am always passionate about social work and I am truly happy and joyed that I am able to perform my PR skills in my area of interest!

I am glad to have found a company who looks up to their CSR department and we are blessed to have a manager who allows us to come up with new ideas on how to perform good deeds to help the animals and the less fortunate.

I will be organizing a few events for the orphans in Miri under the After School Project and I am very excited!

Till next time! Stay tuned for the next update on how my event went!
