Goodbye bloggers, Hello Robofair!

As I entered the Curtin Robofair’s official webpage link www.curtinrobofair.com, looking at the amount of days left until the event gets me excited and scared at the same time. I guess the team and I will have to work harder as time is fast approaching!

This week was very interesting for me, throughout the whole internship, I haven’t actually met anyone outside the Faculty of Science and Engineering (this excludes the launch event), cbsplus and the team involved in the Robofair event. I had an appointment with Violetta Wilk, Campaign and Brand Consultant for University Marketing, Curtin University. We met to discuss the Robofair advertisement that will be featured in The West Australian.

I was instructed by my lovely supervisor Tim to write a client brief for the advertisement. He provided me a draft and in preparation for this brief, I also referred to the client brief I wrote for Diabetes W.A earlier in the semester for my PR Consultancy unit. It was a great guide and I was really careful in writing it. I was representing my supervisors and cbsplus, so I was highly motivated to give a good impression to Violetta.

Violetta’s feedback on the brief was excellent. It made my day but as we discussed further about the advertisement for the West, I realised that it’s not so easy and it actually cost a lot to run an advertisement in newspapers. My meeting with Violetta also involved discussions in breach of copyright, in terms of using images from the web. There are many guidelines that need to be followed in ensuring that Curtin University’s reputation is not at stake. Thankfully, the image my team and I used for one of the posters had consent from its owner. Hopefully, if everything goes well with the advertising agency, our Robofair advertisement will be published on the 24th of November as well as the 3rd of December. So, keep a look out ladies and gentlemen!

Violetta was extremely helpful in giving a clearer picture for the team in utilising the services that Curtin University offers. My team and I were able to figure out who we should approach in the university that could help us out for promotions. Curtin Public Relations, Curtin Alumni, External Relations, Future Students and many more are all on board with us in Robofair. My team and I feel that we are well supported for this event.

Our next step is contacting primary and high school students. My team mates and I will also contact and distribute invitations and posters to game shops and comic book stores in Perth. Because my internship will not end until the event ends, there’s still a lot more to do in this one month to come. I honestly can’t wait for this event, let alone get into details on how to make the event a successful one.

I hope that each and every one of you enjoyed your placement as much as I have. There is no doubt that this experience has been nothing but beneficial to me. Good luck with your reports and all the best for exams!

PS: Don’t forget to attend Curtin University’s first ever Robofair on Saturday, 4th December 2010. It will start at 10am and end at 2pm at the new Engineering Pavilion building, Curtin University.

Yours truly,

Location, Location, Location

Greetings fellow bloggers!

'To all of you who are coming down to the pav this morning, I will spot on time - or perhaps ten minutes late'

- Tim Keely, Supervisor

The text above was a phone text message received on the morning my team and I were suppose to meet up at the Curtin Robofair location.

I hope all of you are well and ready to end the semester. I cannot believe that it is almost over. It seemed like it was yesterday when we were searching for placements, now the end is around the corner.

This is my third blog entry. My topic for this post is Location, Location, Location. As you know (or do not know), my team and I are organising the first ever Curtin Robofair event that will be on December 4th this year. It has been fun and challenging at the same time. I have learned a lot so far and I can't wait to see how our effort will turn up like on December 4th.

The Robofair event will take place in the new Engineering Pavilion building. For most of us commerce students, we rarely find time to walk to the other side of campus, so the building might not sound familiar to you, which is why I have decided to show you the Pavilion through this blog post!

Firstly, for an early read about the building, click on this link here to know more about the Minister for Jobs, Skills and Workplace Relations, Chris Evans' tour around the building.

http://news.curtin.edu.au/news/minister-spends-first-day-on-the-job-touring-curtin/

My supervisors, Tim and Kay took my team and I to the building (which has limited access because it is not yet completed). The purpose of this visit is to plan where the Robofair activities such as the iNexus competition, Robocup performance, career fair and education fair should take place. This is absolutely important because we have to maximise the location proximity as efficient as we can without making it to cram for our visitors.

This was an interesting day not only we got to tour around the building but because we got to see how beautiful the building was. I wasn't surprised because Curtin spent millions of dollars working on the place. Also, figuring out where things should take place for the event in the building was not as easy as I thought it would be. Space is not negotiable and it takes skills to figure out.

Here are some photos taken from our site tour

Also, Tim emailed me this building's blueprint in order to simplify the allocation process. I thought it was pretty cool because I have never worked on blueprints before. It's pretty interesting and we will finalise the allocation in mid of November.

I hope this post has been beneficial to all of you, in the sense of introducing the new Engineering Pavilion building and of course, the location of the Curtin Robofair 2010.

Have a great weekend and I will update my final blog post soon!

Yours truly,

Curtin Robofair 2010

Hi everyone! I'm Liyana and I'm currently interning for the Faculty of Science and Engineering in conjunction for the 2nd iNexus Robotics National Championships. I know my internship is slightly different compared to others who have or are still interning for non profit organizations, public relations companies etc.

This internship is part of my role as a management team member in cbsplus. cbsplus is Curtin Business School's unique professional development program and I'm sure some of you must have seen it in Building 407. Since this is my first blog entry, I won't discuss much on the work that my team and I have done so far. A lot happend for the past 2 months and I can't wait to enlighten you with the details.

My internship does not have working hours. Compared to my previous internship with J. Walter Thompson which I went through during the winter break, I had to commit 9-6pm office hours for 5 days a week. My current internship pretty much takes place during my cbsplus office duty hours and when my supervisors calls my team and I for meetings. Most of our research and work takes place at home. It really depends on where we feel comfortable working. My supervisors Kay Shing Fung and Tim Kelley welcomes us to work in their office at engineering building.

Like I said earlier, I won't go into details about my internship details now. However, I am happy to announce that the event that we've been planning for this year is no longer called the 'iNexus Robotics National Championships'. It is now a new and bigger event called the
'Curtin Robofair 2010'.

More on updates Curtin Robofair coming to you soon!
