Done with the internship

Friday, 13th was the day, my last at 4thirteen Media as an intern. My final week was quite a busy one. I had to help the team in some tasks that I wasn’t assigned to in order to keep work going. I did this because I’m willing to help when help is needed and whenever possible. On February 7th I accompanied my colleagues for shooting at the Thaipusam at Batu Caves on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. Thaipusam is an annual Hindu religion festival, or celebrations to thank their Lord. We left for Batu Caves at 3 am Sunday to avoid congestion as tens of thousands of people were expected to attend the celebrations.
The week commencing on 10th February began slowly with nothing much to do. One of my supervisors had a small task for me to do. He told me to cut 10 A1 size papers into halves and paste them on the notice board, then on each of them write the names of each of the projects that are run by the team. These sheets would then be used to write notes and updates on the progress of the projects, the deadlines and leaders of specific projects. Then I would prepare a Microsoft excel spread sheet that’s would contain all information about the projects, which I named Project Check. This spread sheet contains the project title, project leader, objectives, tasks and due dates. I’ve posted the project check spread sheet on the company’s google docs tool to enable everyone in the team to access it and it is my responsibility to ensure it is updated every week. This means I will continue helping even after my internship, because I’m done only with the internship, but not the projects at work; due to the reason that most of them are long term projects.

Overview of the internship
Cool…cool…this explains it all. The past two months were important to my life, more so that it was my first time ever in my life to work. I have never worked even as part-time. So that is why this internship has been so important to me. I’ve worked with people from all over the world; from Malaysia, Botswana, China, India, USA, South Africa, Liberia, New Zealand and as far as Trinidad and Tobago. It was quite an experience working with these people and I think it has helped me improve my communication skills, which is vital in Public Relations and in the Public Relations industry.

In my final week

It’s almost coming to the end, this is my final week but what can it remind me of? Definitely my first week at work because at that time I actually thought of quiting. It wasn’t because of any major reason, but just because I didn’t like waking up everyday early in the morning preparing for work. We were told to come to work at 10 am which meant I had to wake up around 7 and leave home at 8. it takes me almost 2 hours to arrive at work because I have to take three buses which is cheaper than taxis, but the waiting time for the bus is so long. After work in the evening I arrive at home around 9, which means I would do other domestic duties together with reviewing what I’ve done at work over the day. All in all it takes me up to around 1am, ending up not having enough time for sleeping hence making it quiet difficult for me to wake up in the morning. Should I had quit I wouldn’t be where I am today, but due to my commitment and determination I continued with my internship.

Over the past two weeks we began new projects for two clients. One of them is for the Malaysian Paralympic Committee and the other for a China based music company.
Malaysia will host the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) world general assembly in November. So, our company has been approach to do some public relations and to handle some media related duties for this client.
As for the China project, the company is doing a short documentary for the client which shows how music can bring people from different cultures together. The documentary also shows the importance and effectiveness of teamwork. My supervisors appointed me to the production management role, which would help improve my leadership skills. I helped in the pre-production and now in the production of the documentary which needs planning as well. All the progresses and tasks that we have been doing towards and through this production have helped me understand and get experience in planning.
I was also appointed to help assist prepare the budgeting. All in all, my appointment in the management and budgeting roles would help improve my confidence and self-belief, which will be helpful to me in the public relations industry.

Midway through my internship

Hello fellow interns!!!…hope you are enjoying your time as interns…for those who are done with the internship wish you the best of luck in writing your final reports.
I’m midway through my internship and hope I will do a lot over the next weeks to have enough to write about in my report. For what I’ve done so far I think it’s worth it.
Our bosses gave us various tasks to do over the past few weeks. In week 3 they assigned us to prepare a casting plan for the casting day itself. This was the busiest week as we had to make sure that everything was well in place for the casting. We had to insure the poster placement was done and on time, the studio was cleaned and all the equipments ready. I was (together with an intern colleague) assigned to make a draft of a budget for the casting which would later be edited and confirmed by the big bosses. We were also asked to prepare a casting database sheet that would be used to record all information of people who would be coming for the casting.
I was twice assigned to take minutes in meetings which interested me very much because it was an experience and a test to my concentration period. I am a person who has a short concentration time, even in class I concentrate during the first 20 minutes and the rest of the time I feel sleepy. So this minute taking task helped me improve my concentration skills. This adds to the things I’ve leant so far since I arrived here.

My life and experience as an intern

Hello everyone. I’m Oaitse from Limkokwing University of Technology, Cyberjaya campus. I’m doing my internship with a company called 4thirteenmedia in Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya. This company works with various clients such as the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation , The National Geographic Channel, Jack and Jill. My internship began on the 15th of December and for the past three weeks at work I can say so far it’s all good.

I haven’t had so much to do as I was new to the team; anyway, this is what I expected more especially after I read some of the postings here on some people’s experiences at work in the first week. My bosses explained to me what they are doing and the project they are running, and also highlighted me on the upcoming events. The first task I was asked to do was to brainstorm the necessities of a casting event which is to be held early this year. Then after brainstorming I would do an event planning of the casting, listing everything that will be needed to run the event. Event planning was something familiar to me because I did it in PR 300. We went for the Christmas and New Year eve break on 23rd December and returned on the 2nd of January. On the last day before going for the break, we held a meeting in which we discussed about what we achieved over the year, what we didn’t achieve, which projects were still in progress, and what we were planning for this year.

We began week 2 of work on the 2nd of Jan. There was a lot of work to do in this week as we were running after deadlines. I was assigned to do a checklist for all the things that would be needed for the casting. My bosses were asking me to help them in various activities throughout the week. I’m always ready for any duty that my bosses assign me and I think it’s a challenge for me to adapt to the tight schedule that I might face at work in my lifetime job in future.
