The End of the Beginning

The End of the Beginning

By Alaine Bailey-Bentley Campus

Today was supposed to be my last day at Momentum Forum but unfortunately I was not able to complete it (although I had already completed by 20 required days previously). I had been up vomiting all night and had a fever. I had to call up Barbara regretfully and tell her I could not come to work as I still had a fever and abdominal pain. After going to the doctors he told me it was food poisoning. I wish I could have made up my last day but I begin work at my new internship next week so am unable to do it but I did thank Barbara sincerely for such a great opportunity-both on the phone and in email.

Working for Momentum Forum Events I learnt many things about how to form and maintain relationships with clients, advertise yourself to the public and companies, how to research and contact companies as well as other handy tools such as using Mail Chimp, designing a newspaper advert and writing media releases. It was definitely a worth while experience and I wish Barbara all the best for her next event, the Men in Black Ball which I know will be fabulous if the International Women’s Day Luncheon was anything to go by.

As for me and my future, I have gained another internship with a food blogger. After meeting with her, she promised to help me improve my written skills as well giving me the opportunity to manage her social media accounts (something I am very interested in as a Mass Communication student). She also mentioned that I will be involved in helping her created EDMs, a marketing calendar for her Crust pizza shop that she owns, as well as creating emails and contacting local sponsors for both her blog and her shop. I will always fondly remember Momentum Forum Events as a place that introduced me to the working environment and professional environment and for that I am eternally grateful. This internship has definitely been a worthwhile experience and my advice to future student of the unit is to choose somewhere that is in your desired field as you never know, but it may lead to a job opportunity after your internship completion!

Last and final day

Hi,

So, i extended my placement instead of 20-working days to 23-working days. it is because my supervisor wanted my help with a new client's annual report booklet. I had to Proof read every single thing because the copywriter of the booklet made mistakes in terms of the information regarding the company and some grammatical error.

I did not mind because i enjoyed my time at CD Group due to the friendly environment and hard working co- workers. Like i said before. they never hesitate to give me pointer and ideas to tackle my tasks given.

After going through the documents that needs to be rectified, i submitted the draft to my supervisor and we had a little discussion with CD Group's managing director and the client's representative. They gave the thumbs up and i quickly sent it to the editors and booklet designers to amend the changes i made.

At the end of the extra 3 days, it was time to say goodbye to my supervisor and co-workers. They all gave me words of encouragement and my supervisor said that if i ever wanted to work with them full time, just let her know.

My placement when i first started did not offer any paid allowance to intern but as i was about to leave the office, i was called up to the HR's department and i was surprised to receive  an envelope containing cash and according to the HR officer it was a thank you gesture from the managing director for the my assistance throughout my placement at CD Group

Thanks guys!

Hope you all had a good internship as i did.

"Whatever begins, also ends" - Seneca

Indeed, the end of a story is a beginning for another story.

On 18th of September 2015, it marked the last day of my placement in Miri City Council. Almost 2 months of internship period but it felt like a long journey of knowledge, experiences and involvements.

As a person who enjoy communicating and interacting with people, this placement has improved my communication skills as well as my method of approaching people. For instance, receiving complaints from the public requires excellent listening and communication skills to avoid misunderstanding and to solve the complaint as soon as possible. After observing and learning the proper way of handling complaints, I nailed the tasks with excellence because of my ability to speak 3 languages.

Media clipping has been part of my journey since day 1 of internship. Often, people perceive employees to be slacking for reading newspaper every morning rather than running around the office with huge stacks of documents, but after personal experiences with handling media clipping, I realised how important it is to an organisation. Frankly speaking, I have always thought that units we learnt at school will not be practice in the real corporate world but I was wrong because every single education given to the students by the teacher or lecturer are useful and important.

Miri City Council operate mainly using Bahasa Melayu which to this date has sharpen my capability in communicating using Malay language. While interning, I was assigned to write a letter in response with the request for a study visit to Miri City Council. And yes, I was juggling between Bahasa Melayu and English.

Writing respond to accept a request for study visit.
I really enjoyed every single challenges I faced while interning in Miri City Council because it has improved my ability and strength.

Every organisations has its own corporate culture including Miri City Council. My internship period has given me chance to learn and blend in with its corporate culture;  from learning local dialect to handling events.

My internship experience will forever remain as one of the beautiful memories I have of Miri before graduation because even though we are colleague but we treat each other like family-  Miri City Council Public Relation Department employees organised a small farewell lunch before I end my placement period.

The happy faces of PR departments.

I am thankful for this opportunity and experiences. Now, I am ready for the real corporate world!

Last Day: It's been amazing!

Hi everyone!

Today is officially my last day of internship and it will be sad to leave my desk for one last time. I had an amazing 20 days with the Corporate Communications Department of Curtin Sarawak.

The experience has been nothing short of exhilarating and while I'm excited to pursue a fresh career in over a month, I will always cherish the lessons I picked up over here.

I came into this internship, eager to learn and observe the process of running a department related to PR and my cravings were evidently satisfied. I learned a myriad of things, but more importantly, my attention span for details has improved significantly. Here are the list of things I've picked up.

1. Always be flexible in carrying out tasks outside your job scope
2. Pay attention and scrutinize every small detail
3. Never be afraid to ask for assistance
4. Light music never fails to create a tranquil ambient, which helps the working process.
5. Preserve relationships as much as you can. You never know how it will benefit you.
6. Help your colleagues out. A helpful team is far more productive and easier to work with.
7. Always be professional in dealing with people.
8. Divide and conquer. Don't try to carry out a project all by yourself.

Observation has been my biggest asset of this internship. It may have been for 20 days, but the amount of things I've observed in here will do a great deal in helping me assimilate into the corporate world.

Thanks for the experience, Miss Marcella and Co. I hope you guys continue to grow as a team.

To the rest, thanks for reading folks! I hope you enjoyed your internship too!

Internship experience coming to an end

Hello Everyone,
I am very pleased with my working experience at Sedeco. I am highly indebted to my supervisor and the Managing Director of Sedeco, to have given me an opportunity to show my skills. I have done several mistakes during my internship and I have also learnt from it. I have learnt new things such as how to use Excel as it was an application that was rarely used. I have a knowledge now how difficult it is to manage an organization. I have learnt the importance of working in a team and also I have made new friends such as Nina and Vidhur during my internship. I am going to miss the lunch time where we used to have a chat. I also have with me a lot of beautiful and sweet memories which I have cherished.
Overall, I am satisfied with the different tasks that I have carried out at Sedeco because the main aim of doing the internship has been accomplished. My main tasks during the internship has been: Maintaining the Facebook Page of Sedeco, conducting research, assisting and taking photographs, involved in set up and registration, making speech notes and amongst others. I also had to make several phone calls sometimes to different NGOs and also hotels. I am sure that the tasks that I have completed at Sedeco will help me in the future, especially when I will be working. I would like to say that finding an internship was very tough but after getting an internship, working there and finally leaving after its completion is tough as well.
I am also grateful to several people who have supported me throughout my internship.

It is time to bid farewell

On the last week of my internship, I was given the opportunity to attend a media interview between The Edge Singapore and Subaru.

My colleague and I headed down to Subaru’s office where the interview was conduct. It was a great experience as I managed to see what a real media interview is like and I got the chance to interact with one of the editor.

I remember clearly in Media Relations 250 we were given an assignment to prepare our “client” for a media interview by coming up with a number of questions that could possibly be asked my the media. Similarly, my colleague had to prepare a list of questions to prepare the spokesperson of Subaru for the interview.

The interview lasted for almost an hour and everything went well. The interview was conducted on Monday, and on Wednesday, we received a call and was notified that the interview would be covered in next week’s (this week) paper. I was never expected coverage to be obtained so quickly. Just for everyone’s info, The Edge Singapore is a weekly publication.

Just incase if anyone is interested in the interview, please find below the coverage.

Another big opportunity that I was given was a chance to pitch to Nikkei, and I am glad that I managed to secure an interview with them for Subaru. The only down side is that the interview would be conducted this week and I would not be able to witness it happening.

3 months just flew by and it is still so surreal that my internship has come to an end. Last Friday, 30th May 2014, marked the end of my internship journey with Rice Communications and it definitely has been an enjoyable and interesting one.

During these 3 months I have definitely learned a great deal that would be useful for me to continue in the PR industry. I am glad to have been given this opportunity to join Rice Communications as an intern.

Cheers,
Sheryl
