Week one. The word that comes to mind when I think of the past week is "exciting". Everything about this week has been exciting for me as I have been lucky enough to complete my placement at GO communications in Kuala Lumpur (KL) in Malaysia. GO communications has some amazing clients and is filled with 'out of the box' thinkers that really understand the beauty of good PR. The company has won numerous awards and by simply meeting the employees you can definitely see why.
It has definitely become apparent that I have dived into an entirely different country as well as a new company, both of which were completely foreign to me just a little over a week ago. The office at GO Communications is open plan and consists of two teams, I was put into the 'A-team' with some really incredible people. The main tasks of this week for me included media monitoring and clippings which play a huge role in keeping up with our clients and their competitors media coverage, as well as media calls and small writing tasks given to me by my colleagues. Media clippings were the first port of call for each day and took up a fair bit of time. It was with my list of clients and the English newspapers in front of me that I suddenly felt this experience was real.
Apart from searching through newspapers and keeping up with competitors of our clients, I was lucky enough to be involved in an event my team was holding for one of our clients. The event was for a burger company who were opening their second store in KL. It was held the day before valentines day and used the theme "sparking a friendship over a burger". This concept was so fun and exciting as it brought young single people together for a fun night complete with a matchmaking game and free burgers.
The day before the event we were given our roles and had a quick run through of the night highlighting who was responsible for which part. I was given the role of the photographer and given a quick brief of the specific photos that were needed. These photos were going to be sent to the media, accompanying the media release and other relevant documents so no pressure...
One of the main things I noticed whilst at the event was the relationship my colleagues had with the members of the media, and how accommodating they were to them. The media personnel were given the same treatment as the guests at the event with free burgers, drinks and snacks at their finger tips. This made it clear that relationships and networking were going to be a big part of my public relations journey.
In the end the photos turned out well, even though we had way more then we needed as I had spent the whole night in peoples faces asking for a photo, the media releases and media calls were made and everyone was happy with how it went.
The working week ended on Valentines day which created a great vibe throughout the office complete with heart shaped balloons and Hershey's chocolates.
I think I am going to like it here!
