During my time interning I have come to
better understand the importance of events within the PR and communications
sector, especially within not-for profit organizations. Within one week at my
internship placement there were over three different events scheduled. My job
during this time was to better understand and become familiarized with the
monthly BBQ held at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
The BBQs are free events held monthly,
whereby parents, patients as well as hospital staff can gather, socialize and
grab something to eat within a relaxed atmosphere. Available also is children
music, family activities and the mascot is there as entertainment.

Hosting this event for the hospital is not
just a nice idea, I have learnt there are also many benefits. Firstly the not-for
profit organisation enlists special corporate sponsors or well-known
personalities to come and help serve food and cook during the BBQ. This not only benefits the organisation but
is also seen as good PR for the individuals and businesses taking the time to
help out.
Hosting the monthly BBQs is also a channel
for the not for profit organization to stay relevant to their different
stakeholders, making their existence known as well as maintaining and
establishing positive relationships.
My tasks before the BBQ is to sort out all
the preparations. Picking up gas bottles, bread and equipment. I also help with
the set up and meet with the corporate sponsors or personalities before
hand. During the BBQ my jobs may vary.
Sometimes I help cook, or walking around talking to patients and parents,
telling them about the foundation and what we do.
In all the BBQs are always fun events,
which get different stakeholders together in a casual way, further building
strong relationships. Can’t wait for the next one!
