Okay, week three. This week it has really sunk in how little
time is left so I made a promise to make the most of it. I have gotten to know
the people I work with well and I’m realising just how sad it is going to be to
leave. This week I have really tried to see more on Kuala Lumpur and make an
effort to spend time with the people that in a weeks’ time I may not see for a
very long time. So this week outside of work every day I went ice-skating in a
shopping mall, rode a rollercoaster at a theme park (also in the middle of
shopping mall) and fell in love with pineapple!
At GO Communications this week it was all about the little
things, the media monitoring, the client reports, and the PR value. All the
little things that need to be done before you can even think about the big
things. I was lucky enough to work on a client report this week for Nikon,
which kept me quite busy. The report highlighted all of the media attention the
client had received with calculations of public relations value for the ones
that my team has instigated. It also highlighted all of the competitor’s media
coverage. Also included in this report was the run-down of the work my team had
done for Nikon in the past month, and details of any events that were held and
what for. The report was huge and it was a great relief when it was finished.
Also happening this week were brainstorm sessions with the
CEO for MYC which is a youth portal that helps the students get the best out of
their time at school and higher education. They are the go to people for
students for any information regarding the best brands of computers to the
hottest deals on textbooks and they even run creativity sessions, that help
students become more confident and find what they are really passionate about.
Throughout this brainstorm session I found I was drawn in by everyone’s
creative ideas and the way people could build upon others ideas so quickly. Within
an hour my team had a game plan for the next 9 months for the client and we
were off to make it happen.
Before leaving work on Friday I was asked to help with an
event for Nikon on the weekend. I felt so excited because I had been heavily
involved in the work my team did for Nikon and wanted to see some plans in
motion. The event was a charity photo hunt, where the teams were given clues
and had to take photos of the answers in the most creative way they could. The
money raised went to the Siddhartha Care Centre, an orphanage in Malaysia.
The event was a big success and even though I was just there to help with media
registration I was still able to see the processes and how the media interacted
with the client and vice versa. One of the main things I have noticed whilst
interning at GO Communications is how the media are treated by the PR
consultancy. They are almost always given free things whether it is food,
drinks or vouchers. At this particular event the media were given a goody bag
filled with Nikon merchandise and Starbucks voucher. That is one thing I think
has got to differ from Australia, but definitely works well here in Malaysia.
Another week down, bring on week four.
