Bowling for Games Day

---------------------Posted on the behalf of Abigail Ang--------------------------
24 May 2011 (Backdated)

Bowling for Games Day only happened this week, 23 May. A lot of arrangements were only made last minute as we only confirmed the dates with the schools at the last hour, and many bowling alleys were fully booked. There was a last minute scramble to get the logistics up and running for the event. Sometimes I find it a challenge to accomplish an event within a limited time frame, but sometimes I like that satisfaction when I everything gets done after the rush.

Finally we managed to book NSRCC Safra Bowl for our Bowling event and things started following up after that. However, we faced some problems with our staff volunteers. For this event, we had sent out an email blast (our usual method) to ask for volunteers. At first we had an overwhelming response, but when nearer to the event date, we had many drop outs, mainly because of work commitments. Even though such problems are inevitable, I believe that we have yet to cultivate a CSR culture internally yet.

We have to work on this! (:

YPP Amazing Race

Ever watched the Amazing Race on tv? Now we will be having one within Changi Airport itself, where staff volunteers will team up with students in a friendly competition of strength and wits in a race against time and each other around the airport. As I was the main coordinator for this event, I had to come up with the various stations and games for the race, as well as to coordinate the staff volunteer sign ups.

Each time we have such Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, we have to publicize the particular activity to draw staff volunteer sign ups. Besides this, our publicity has to be able to communicate to our internal staffs our company’s CSR direction. We face several difficulties in this because mainly I believe that the staffs do not see this CSR activity as a company effort, but more like a divisional effort and believe that their bosses will not support the idea of them taking Volunteerism Leave to participate in such activities during working hours. We are working on this by taking steps to get the senior management more involved in the programme, so that we can showcase management support to our CSR cause.

Coming back to the Amazing Race, the logistics were crazy as we had to do everything from scratch, besides the planning of the games and activities, but also the props and materials since we were on a tight budget for this year. (boo I hate cutting costs. :( ) Luckily, the rest of the CSR team pitched in to help, and with the help of some staff volunteers, we managed to come up with fun and yet engaging stations for the teams.

We faced some manpower shortage nearer to the date of the race as there were last minute pull outs from our staff volunteers. I knew it! Nothing ever happens peacefully for once during events like these, but I guess that’s what I like most about my job – the surprises that I get. In the end, we managed to solve the problem by getting our own division colleagues to stand in.

Overall I think the event was a huge success. (:

Anyway I guess you guys have noticed that my posts are like full of words but no pictures. It’s because I’m not allowed to expose the students’ identities to external parties. So sorry about it guys! ):

Fire Station Tours

---------------------Posted on the behalf of Abigail Ang----------------------------
1 March 2011 (backdated)
As mentioned in my previous entry, as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, we conducted a Fire Station Tour, where the students got an exclusive tour of Changi Airport’s Fire Stations which are not accessible to public. For this event, I took a back seat and helped out whenever necessary.
The hair pulling moments of the event? The logistics and planning of the event. We had to gain approval from numerous parties, such as Airport Police, to allow the students to go through the security systems on the way to Changi Airport Fire Station. It was extremely time-consuming as we had to find means and ways to accede to their requests, for example, getting personal information from the students. There was a lot of waiting involved and we could do nothing as there were a lot of third parties involved. Also, we had to
Best part of the event? The smiles of the students and staff volunteers when our passionate and friendly Airport Emergency Services (aka as the firemen in layman terms) demonstrated fire fighting exercises for the students, and even let the students had a go at fire fighting. The students had fun putting out fire with the special water hoses, as well as trying on the “fire suit”. Kudos to our Airport Emergency Services guys for going all out to make the tour a success!
Since my boss knows I’m on PR attachment, I was given the chance to help out the Corporate Communications and Marketing division to give my inputs regarding the Fire Station Tours for an article for Changi Connection, which is only meant for private circulation among our company’s clients and partners. I had to sieve out what relevant information was to be included in the article, after which I had to clear with my boss. furthermore, the photos which I had picked out to include in the article, had to gain clearance from Airport Police that these photos are okay for publication, as I had mentioned before, Changi Airport Fire Station is a restricted area, so I was afraid that they might be a tad touchy if we had published the photos without their permission. Luckily they gave the green light for the couple photos that I chose.
Many apologies for can’t share any photos with you guys. Or else I have to go for another round of clearance from Airport Police (again). :P

Hello to All!

A brief overview of what I’m doing so you guys are kept in the loop. (:
I’m currently working full time in a division that is in charge of the corporate development as well as the international relations on my company. I’m part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team of the company, headed by my division, which runs my company’s CSR programme. As what I have learnt from my PR classes, CSR is becoming increasingly popular among organisations today as they recognize the importance to be a socially-responsible organization to give back to the community.
We came up with this programme, named the Youth Passport Programme (YPP). Yup as you can guess, we are mainly targeting youths, usually in secondary schools. We had to come up with a workplan full of suitable activities to engage both the students, as well as staff volunteers.
We had obtained approval from our senior management to go ahead with the programme, and the upcoming activities include Fire Station Tours, the YPP Amazing Race and Games Day.
My PR skills come in when I have to communicate to internal staffs our CSR cause, as well as to encourage their participation in our activities. As our CSR programme is still in the initial stages, we do not do much publication to external parties and media, but we are slowly getting there!
I’m very hyped up to be part of this exciting CSR programme!
Stay tuned for more! (:
