Beware of the blitz

A dominant part of my internship role is to design a monthly e-blitz for individual clients. For those of you playing at home an e-blitz is a fun way to say online newsletter sent out via you guessed it, electronic mail (e-mail). When designing an e-blitz it is important to layout all pieces of information to be incorporated for the ever so talented graphic designer to easily create the design for you. Basically I kick it old school and grab a piece of paper and a pen to draw how I want it to look.  Here is a verbal example of my work for East West Cleaning Supplies:

1. Firstly I draw a space at the top of an A4 page to include a banner. I found a picture I would like to incorporate from their webpage of a window getting cleaned to perfection, I feel this may catch the reader’s eye and entice them to keep reading about the blitz. (As mentioned in my previous post we are in a very visual age with everyone staring at some device.) I also put a company slogan “ A clean environment is a happy workplace” to highlight the benefits of East West Cleaning Supplies.

2. I then position the logo in the banner on the left hand side. As we read from left to right the viewer will instantly see the company at the top of the page in the banner with the eye catching photo.

3. Next I have to write the text to be included in the body of the newsletter. This specific newsletter is attempting to engage new business clients and highlight the benefits of having a clean office space and first impressions mean everything. The text only takes up one column of the page and the other column is reserved for promotional advertising with a call to action i.e. “Call us for a quote today!”

4. The final part is designing the bottom banner containing the company contact details.

5. Then I sent it off to the graphics department to bring my creation to life!

It was very interesting to see how much effort goes into creating that one e-blitz in turn comparing it to the amount that hit my inbox daily! I personally think the subject line is the most important part, if there is nothing in there that grabs me DELETED.
