And the award goes to, Blair Limpitlaw of Curtin University. Or at least it has certainly felt like I have won a prestigious award!
Last weekend was the Clubs WA 2013 Awards for Excellence held at Crown Perth. I as a public relations intern had been slaving away for weeks and weeks in preparation for the evening. All the work was finally done. The press releases were sent out, invitations made, programmes printed, the slide show was finished and now it was time to see all my hard work come together.
I could not have been happier with the way the evening played out. Yes, there were a few slip ups here and there but on a whole the evening was a great success and it was such an amazing experience to be a part of.
The ‘Winter Wonderland’ theme came to life through elegant lighting which one of the other interns created and help from the team at Phenomenon. Blue and silver sashes were draped over the chairs to compliment the colour scheme and snow flake decorations could be seen throughout the room and presentations.
Andrea Burns hosted the evening magnificently, employing her journalistic skills to get interesting responses from the award winners and to entertain the crowd of 450+!
I was in charge of ‘my baby’ – the two slide show presentations I had created for the evening and ensuring the sound and lighting technicians were working collaboratively with me. After making myself familiar with the equipment at the venue I was confident to take charge and ensure the presentation was well timed and executed as it should be.
After being taught how to create event schedules and timelines in university it was excellent to see their effectiveness in the real world. Thanks to the preparation we had done in the weeks and months leading up to the evening we reduced any margin of error and were able to deliver a thoroughly enjoyable evening for all of our stakeholders.
It is incredibly pleasing to see things ‘just work’. The awards evening just worked. I am still uncertain whether or not event planning will be something I look forward to later in my career due to the fun and excitement of the actual event, or if it will be something to dread because of all the hours of preparation and lead up!
