Hi everyone,
“Gong Xi Fa Chai”, wish you all have an auspicious and prosperous Chinese New Year. Hope you all enjoy your internship. Here I would like to continue sharing some of my experiences which I had gain from my internship.
Continue from previous post, when I mentioned I had been requested to help my superior in one of the biggest event in Eastwood (Kwong Wei Siew Association Dinner), I had coincidently met our CEO. I found out that he is very nice and friendly person. At first, I do not know that he is our CEO; I thought he is just a normal guest. As the professionalism of giving service, I treated him nicely and friendly as the other guests. After I chat with him for a while, I just found out that he is the CEO of the company, and he suddenly offers me a full-time job, to help him start up a PR department in Eastwood. I am kind of surprise and overwhelmed as I never knew this would happen to me. He wants me to directly help him in Eastwood, but kindly I have to reject the offer as I need to complete my studies first. I do not want to give up my studies after I strive for so many years. Right? Anywhere, I am glad that he offer me the position, at least he appreciate and satisfied with my job performance (I believe).
Besides that, some other event which I had joined is the Eastwood Underwater Christmas Children Party. Few days before the event started, we had been busy in preparing all the materials used for the party and get ready the games coupons. Likewise, as an assistant for my superior, I have to help him organize the whole event as he needs to spend most of his time to become an emcee. Not only that, as we have a lot of different games’ stall and each stall is handle by different department, I also have to help each department to handle their games. However, most of the time I spend my time in helping the Golf Department to handle the Miniature Golf game, as they are lack of manpower.
After busy with all the Underwater Christmas Children Party, I started to do a proposal for Valentine promotion. Instead of just offering Valentine Dinner, I raise my suggestion to add on some activities in the valentine package to attract more participants. Well, not only making a plan, but I also have to prepare a simple budget for those games. Actually it is quite challenging in order for me to complete a plan and prepare a complete budget for such a real event, because everything I included must be accurate and reliable.
However, I did enjoy my new experience in Eastwood and I am happy with my working environment. So, I hope you all feel the same okay. Good luck!
Best Regard,
Sherly

Hi Sherly
It’s great to read about your unique experience, I find it interesting that you had to apply your PR knowledge by yourself and no one to really mentor you that must give you a lot of space for creativity. I'm also happy to see that you have met the CEO, and clearly he was impressed by the way you carried yourself.
What are some of the challenges you have faced? For instance did you ever feel that it was difficult for you to voice out ideas regarding PR as you might not be sure of exactly how it should be done, or because the company did not have the budget to carry out the plan?
Personally I have learned that in the PR world what we learn in class and from the text books are a mere glimpse of the true PR world. Sad to say, the same goes for the ethical viewpoints of PR. I have noticed that in the classroom we are taught that ethical practice is important yet in the real world it is not always top priority. What do you think?
However in regards to ethics, I must say it is often clients who ask for unethical practice and not the PR firms and agencies.
Thank you for your enlightening posts and I hope to read more of your unique experiences.
Regards,
Anna (LUCT campus)
Hi Sherly,
Congratulations on getting such a job offer. You must really have impressed your CEO. Good on you.
Me personally I have been offered to return to the hotel on part time basis during the semester(I only go to work on days I am free). Maybe you could ask if you could do that too. Its a good chance to create more contacts and maintain your current ones, right?
Anyway,I see that you are really doing very well for yourself especially since you don't actually have an actual supervisor in the field of PR. Similar to myself here.
Don't forget to have fun and remember that there is always a hidden lesson in everything.
Peace.
Thank Anna. Yes, I do have a problem to voice out my idea. As you know, I was new to the company and most of the thing they do is already in the planned. The schedule for the events and functions they carry are very packed. It is quite difficult for me to propose my idea and implement it in such a short period of time. But what I can do is to make a proposal to my boss and discuss it with my colleagues, hoping that they will accept my proposal. Beside that, my superior needs to look through my proposal and get an approval from the top management for all the budgets that I stated.
Not only that, I also have to get use with the time they spend in completing their work. Now I know that it is not easy to work in resort industry. The more events and functions they have, the more time we need to spend in the work place. Even Sunday or night time, we have to come for overtime job. Sometime, we need to help other departments if they are lack of manpower.
Working with my placement company make me come to realize that, to be a responsible person, we have to do everything even though it is not under our specialization. This is what they call professional (I believe so). In my own taught, this is lifelong learning and here is also where the new experience begins too.
Well, regarding to the ethical issue, I think sometime it is quite difficult to handle. However to be a professional PR consultant, it is importance for us to know what our stand is. No matter what is the reason, try to make thing right and follow the ethical conduct of the company. Although clients are always right, but as a part of PR consultant, it is importance for us to bring ethical culture in the future PR industries.
Thank you for your great comment, and wish you all the best in your PR393. Cheers!!
Best Regard,
