Internship

Hello everyone!

This is Jessica and i've been interning in a small company called Arcis Communications. They focus on every aspect of public relations and marketing communications. There are so many PR companies coming about in Malaysia and from the beginning I hoped to join a smaller company because i felt i could learn more as it is a more intimate.

When i first began in Arcis Communications, i was extremely nervous but i felt like i was prepared, after all the years learning public relations, i wanted to see how the things i've learned would be able to be applied in my practical, and of course it does in so many ways.
Also, my managers are extremely friendly so this took my nerves away as they made me feel like i belong there and feel like i've worked with them for a long time already:)

My first week, I was already very busy as we were preparing for 3 different events/occasions for 3 different clients.
There was a TV event happening happening the next day, a food review session happening in a few days and a sports event the next week. My company was very busy and i was glad that i was there to help!
When i first got to work, I was put in charge of calling the media to confirm their attendance. There was a certain number of media my manager targeted to attend each functions and she ask me to try my best. At first I didn't feel so confident when i began calling down all the targeted media, but later on i got used to it. I managed to finish the call downs, which was harder than i thought as media people are sometimes hard to get in touch with, then help prepare media kits for the function.

From what i gathered, finally, by the end of the week, calling down the media is to make sure that the targeted media received the invitation and to see how many of the targeted media will be able to attend. If the media has yet to receive the invitation, then I would re-send the invitation or inform them directly over the phone and it is important to confirm the attendance so that enough media kits are prepared to be given out during the function.
It's great that i was able to do this because i got to learn more about the media in Malaysia and the people working for the media. I got to meet many people working in the media which was a great opportunity as we've learned that having a good relationship with the media is important in PR and my manager mentioned the same thing.

Has anyone else been contacting the media as much as i?? let me know!

Jessica Buri
