Week 2 at Nova 937 Radio Station

Hi Everyone,
I have now completed 14 days at Nova 937 radio station. This week I have gained marvelous practice in event management. The new drive team on Nova – Ryan Monty and Wippa were in Perth this week for one day. At the station we threw a function for them. Chief stakeholders were invited to the event so they could meet the new announcers and reinforce their ties to the Nova brand. The event was a 2 hour drinks party with appetisers and a short presentation by the new drive team. The 6 hours prior to the event was manic. It consisted of organising drinks, liaising with the catering company, collecting bits and pieces from the supermarket, setting up the actual aesthetics and working out the logistics of the event. This included collecting and setting up flags, tables, ice and decorations.

Although taxing and laborious the event was a triumph and everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves. It served its purpose to have direct communication and contact with some of Nova’s stakeholders and helped foster relationships with these key people. It also worked to strengthen internal relationships and communication whilst also giving information about the new team.

A further main project for this week was the outside broadcast called "Home Invasion". This is basically where the breakfast show broadcast their show from somewhere outside of the studio. In this case, from someone’s home. This initiative is aimed at strengthening Nathan and Nat's ties to the average listener and the community in general.

To help organise the broadcast, I produced a run list which told everyone where to be when, what to expect to happen and what to do. This ensured that nothing was forgotten and that it ran smoothly and on time. Producing a run list is important in planning almost any event. I also organised Ghost Buster costumes for the radio announcers to wear at the haunted house as a gimmick.

This week also saw a continuation of my work on the upcoming Good Vibrations Launch Party which Nova are organising in conjunction with the venue – The Ruby Room. My foremost ongoing contribution to this event is organising the guest list for the VIP area. This includes numerous emails and telephone calls back and forth, confirming mailing addresses and hyping up the event on forums like face book.

Although not a public relations experience, I also enjoyed spending some time in the production studio. This is where the computer magic happens and an idea from creative is prepared into an advertising sweeper. Intense communication between the advertising agency, Nova’s creative advertising team and the production person is involved in every new advertisement you hear on the radio. Furthermore the advertising agency also has to get it approved by their actual client before it goes to air. An appreciation for effective communication was definitely gained by witnessing this side of radio production.

Until next week...

Thanks for reading

Niki

Hi Nikki,

Your work experiences sounds fantastic - but challenging I am sure!

How did you find running such a long (6 hour plus) event? Did people come early and leave before presentations, or arrive later etc?

Look forward to hearing from you!

Amanda :)

That definetly sounds like you have a fun placement to work with! It must be good to work in the media so you can focus mostly on publicity and brand strengthening as opposed to trying to attain media coverage. That is one obstacle i am facing at the moment, trying to get coverage for the events i am assisting with! I now know why it is so vital to make everything appear exciting and of value to the media. that does sound like a pretty cool work placement.

with reference to your comment about Nova trying to get Nathan and Nat to connect with the average listener, has this been viewed as an issue at Nova, and what are they doing to rectify the issue?
