My internship is being undertaken at Make-A-Wish foundations WA/SA state office, located in West Perth. The state office conducts the company’s marketing and has more of a corporate focus, concentrating on establishing and nurturing commercial relationships to benefit the company and enable the benefit to be passed onto the facilitation of children’s wishes. I chose to apply for this foundation above others as I strongly agree with the philosophy of the company ‘To grant the Wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy’.
My first week has been primarily focused on the attention of members. The company has recently struck an alliance with a networking group to form Wishes of the West. This assembly runs networking events, with all proceeds being donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The board is compiled of young individuals, primarily in the marketing industry and was established in December of 2008.
It has become evident, the importance of members, particularly in a not-for-profit environment. As it is imperative that these relationships are cultivated, much of my time has been dedicated to assembling membership packs, including all the necessary information to attain the utmost involvement from these affiliates and also sending attendees of the events, membership information in an effort to provoke enrolment.
This part of my internship has really shown me that PR is not always glitz and glamour! It takes a large amount of leg work to get to the final result however I believe that as the placement grows closer to the campaign dates it will brighten up somewhat and involve more creative opportunities!
As for now I am left with no fingerprints, as they have been detached from peeling off too many labels!
