Approaching deadlines

Hi all,

So this is my fourth and final post. The last week or so has been quite busy in the PR department, we have had a couple of team members getting ready to leave us, one come back from getting married overseas and another go on a little holiday.

I am currently working on the next issue of the Child and Adolescent Health Service’s magazine entitled Kite Tales. It is a bi-monthly magazine and so the current issue in progress will be distributed in June. Not only is there a bit of stress surrounding the June issue because the PR department has had a few team members on leave recently but it is also a special centenary edition. The outside pages of the magazine is a wrap, so it can be removed from the other pages of the magazine and kept as a memento if desired, also meaning there are more pages and there for a need for more stories of interest to be included.

The deadline is fast approaching with the text deadline for articles the end of next week and images the following week, a day or so before it goes to the printer. A little hiccup, but also a common hiccup surrounding the stories is that one story we planned to include in this issue has been requested by the relevant department to be held over to the next issue. This is completely fine but what it means is that we now need to find another story idea to replace it (which we usually have a couple of backups) or do some rearranging with the formatting. Another challenge that we face closer to the deadline is that different areas of CAHS last minute have stories that they think will be suitable and therefore if we also think they’re relevant we need to do a bit more juggling. I am enjoying formatting and fiddling with the layout of this issue and helping to make some of the less interesting stories a bit more entertaining to read.

I can see now how important it is to send out requests for stories from particular departments/authors as early as possible, sometimes even with a shorter deadline to ensure that we have the suitable information in time to tweak it for the Kite Tales audience before printing. I am really enjoying watching the magazine come together as the deadline gets closer and closer.

The end of semester is also fast approaching with roughly a month before our reports are due. I am guessing many people are almost finished their placements as well. I hope everyone has enjoyed their placement and i wish everyone all the best with their reports.
