Frustrated

Hi Guys,

This is only my second post as its taken me so long to be able to get back into the blog. I've had so many problems with it.

Anyway, I've only got a few days of my work experience left but I've been spreading the days out to one day a week as the company I'm working for RMPR doesnt really have enough work for me to do lump sums of days. Sometimes they've even called me to tell me not to come in as they have nothing for me to do. Even if I do come in I spend most of my days filing. I see alot of public relations work being done around me but unfortunately I don't really partake in alot of it. It seems I'm more of the errand and research girl. Which is so frustatrating. I thought that working for a consultancy such as this one would give me a wide variety of experience in all different areas however this particluar consultancy is a rather small one and no one but the boss (also the owner) seems to do alot of the heavy PR stuff. My boss doesn't seem very good at delegating.

However my boss does ask my opinions on alot of things that he has done and usually takes all of my points into consideration which is good. I found out today that someone we are working closely with on a project is one of my journalism tutors, David Cohen from last semester so it just shows how small Perth really is.

Although I'm quite disappointed at the lack of actual PR things that I am doing I have gotten the chance to see quite alot of elements from our PR classes being put into practise - I just wish I was doing some of them. Working at a consultancy has also shown me that theres still quite alot of holes in my studies, as I do Mass Comm so have not done a full course in PR and my boss has helped fill quite a few gaps as often he explains to me what he's doing and why. In that respect he's very good. He takes alot of time to explain things to me, I just dont get to do any of them myself.

Hi Steph,

I can understand that it would be frustrating to not be given the chance to "get your hands dirty." If you feel comfortable talking to your supervisor, would it be possible to tactfully mention your concerns and ask to be involved in some more PR-related tasks? It sounds like you have a good working relationship if he is happy to take the time to explain things you do not understand. It is unfortunate that you do not have many days left of your placement but if you are finding that they are quite spread out, perhaps there is time to become involved in some more exciting tasks before you finish up.

Good luck and I hope your frustration subsides!

Hi there Steph!

I am sorry to hear that they are not giving you a lot of things to do. However, this also shows what happened in the real world of work, when there are times where there are not many things to be done and things run very slow in the office. At times it is things like events, crisis etc. which really makes a company such as a PR agency work. I suppose this also forms parts of the work experience which we are suppose to get, that is, to know and experience busy timing and that of slow days. I have also been experiencing days when there are not much to do in the office.

However, you do have time to ask your supervisor for more things to do, approach him and let him know that you would like to have things to do.

It is not too late as you have days left.

I do hope that you have enjoyed the other days you have had there.
Best of luck!!
