Warning: Finding a placement may require panadol

Hi all,

So I’m a few weeks into my placement and thought I should get a start on these blogs. The whole process of trying to find a suitable placement was frustrating, to say the least. Time after time I would hear knock backs such as “We don’t have the capacity to take in a student”, “The eastern states deal with our public relations” or “We already have someone in”, the later was probably my fault for leaving it too late.

Sometimes if I was lucky enough to get a call or email back or even an interview I figured out that somehow that fact that I am look for public relations work experience was lost in translation. Here’s where I heard “We only do marketing”, “I thought it was just general work experience” or “Sorry, we only take on high school students”. Yes, at that place I would have been beaten out by a 15 year old, at that point I was so desperate I just wanted to say “Come on, I was in high school”.

A couple of weeks (and $50 over my $310 mobile cap) later I remembered a conversation I had with a modeling and events company who said they will speak to their manager and get back to me. They could have just forgotten, right? So I called them back and they said (drum roll please) they would give me a call back. Damn, I thought my luck had changed with this one!

Two days on and they called me back with a “when can you start?”. Success! After an interview, approval forms and emails with Katharina I started at Crazy Sexy Cool, a Perth based modeling, promotions and events company.

There were a few concerns about whether or not this place was suitable for PR, but I was at the point where I just wanted to start somewhere. I shall keep you all posted on how it goes, wish me luck!

Hello Ivy!

Dont worry, you're not alone. I was having quite problems too when looking for intern! Thank God, Miri City Council accepted me as their intern.
Regarding to your concern, dont worry, I think not every organization in the world can grasp the function and meaning of PR and what PR does, like in Malaysia. In Perth there's more hope for Public Relations to flourish. Its only been few weeks... =) So have fun and much experience as you can!
=)

Oh I certainly know what you have been going through. Last semester I tried to find placement in Miri and it is a much smaller city than Perth.

I pretty much got the same answers like you did. Most did not bother to contact back. Some have forgotten. Most of the time, they just can't accept me at that time.

I was getting desperate and I asked people who are working in Miri for help. I even posted online asking for help.

All this to no avail. I had to defer to this semester and find placement back in my home town, Kuching. To my complete surprise, I got accepted from my first choice, Hilton Kuching.

Well, I hope you're having fun! With a company with such a such a catchy name, I'm sure you will. :) Good luck and keep us posted!
