The end at a hedge fund

I have finally finished my internship at Burgess Trading Technologies and it is safe to say that I have a thorough understanding of the hedge fund industry that I previously knew nothing about.

Unlike some of you, I did not encounter any major issues. It was all pretty much smooth sailing. Hard work in the sense it was time consuming and I had to apply all of my knowledge of the pr industry to a business that did not really utilise any pr functions. But definitely a worthwhile experience.

After working at BTT it is evident that they have a lot of pr opportunities they have not yet taken advantage of. That was pretty much my role there.. identifying communication objectives and pr avenues in order to implement communication programs. As previously mentioned, they are a relatively new business and do not have many relationships with the media which is a disadvantage at the moment as the have a competitive advantage as they have created something mathematically that other hedge funds are not doing within Australia so respectable media coverage could really accelerate their growth.

I have identified other forms of pr for them to consider such as corporate social responsibility, sponsorship, and corporate identity development to name a few. I really hope they expand on what I have identified for them as I think a strategic communications plan is something they will really benefit from at this stage. I think they will also really benefit from hiring a financial pr consultancy in order to develop and implement the communications campaign so they reach their aims sooner.

Ps. I have noticed that most people and so many small businesses have a misconception about what public relations stands for. It still amuses me how most people think it is purely networking or organising an event…

Hope you all gained a lot from you internships.

Bye for now,

Sounds like you had a great time. I agree that it is time consuming but a worth wild exercise.

It was interesting to read the tasks that you were given, especially them asking you to identify communication objectives and pr avenues.

Good to hear you enjoyed it.
