THE WATER SECTOR REFORMS PROGRAMME

Having learnt about the corporation, how to take care of customers (clients), and public relations generally our nationwide project (WATER SECTOR REFORMS) which is currently running, opened my mind in a manner that incorporates maturity as well as system execution skills.

The Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) which I am working for is taking over all water suppliers in Botswana which include Water Affairs and Councils, the project is carried out as an initiative from the Ministry of Minerals Energy and Water Resources in conjunction with the World Bank. The corporation is now working on the phase 2 takeover which started on the 1st of February 2010. My latest duty as a PR intern was to help come up with list of names of people to be invited to the takeover meeting in their respective constituencies prior to the above mentioned date. We were working on 22 constituencies separated in clusters which had to be briefed from 27th till 29th January, in each of these meetings we had to look for catering companies as well to offer refreshments.

I had to call village administrations to talk to the Chief about the takeover, his approval means sending invitation letter which I also did to village elders, school heads and other important businesses which mostly uses water. This WSR projects started in 2006 and is due to be completed in 2014, it goes as follows:

NWMPR-National Water Master Plan Review

As we can see this is a big project which when discussed would take the whole time. These are kind of assignment taught me much in terms of accuracy, time management, responsibility as well as good customer care skills/communication skills as well how to avoid panic. This is because a lot of people call or come to the office looking for clarification or information about this waters sector reform project, these include the media. Amongst these I am not yet in a position to take interviews from the media or give out any confidential figures, so in times like that I refer them to the Communication and Public Relations Manager or the PRO.

Advice on handling projects like these according to one’s experience or knowledge would be highly appreciated as there is still a lot to do.
