Research is the crucial first step in PR. It is essential to evaluating an organisation’s reputation and repairing it if need be. It is essential in evaluating stakeholder’s relationship and assessing how successful the organisation is in achieving its mission. (Kathleen Ladd Ward)
I have done so many research works in school with regards to assignments and some other projects, and it has been a contributing factor for me in doing a good job with those assignments/projects. But when I started my internship, and after getting involved with so many research works; I came to realize that in PR, research is not a contributing factor in doing an impressive work, rather it’s the bases for success. It’s the centre of attraction, the focus for a satisfactory work for you and your clients. Research is an essential task within public relation, used to identify the requirements for a communication program, to assist in establishing the program, to check progress and to evaluate the effectiveness.
We are now working with a new client called Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA). My company (Samanea PR) are expected to do a PR plan for the new development to be done by the said client. We don’t have any knowledge about the place of the development, so the only option is to embark on a thorough research (both qualitative & quantitative) about the place. On the other hand, we need to inquire/research on the vision and mission of our client company in other to have a perfect direction for satisfaction. It’s our responsibility to know what they want, how they want it and how best to apply it for their satisfaction. It’s always important to come up with something new for your clients as a result of quality research.
In conclusion, research is simply the compass for navigation in PR; when you talk about PR, you talk about research. Please be advised not to be discouraged or frustrated because of the volume of research that you have to do in other to come up with an impressive/satisfactory work, but rather keep your focus on the success that will be the product of your research. Keep up the research work!
Cheers!

Research as we know needs attention, effort and time for it to be perfect. Copy and paste does not work in Public Relations because someone has to understand all the requirements for the topic being researched for.
1. Research needs further reading and understanding of the said topic.
2. You have to understand what the topic is all about before even opening the site or book for research orelse you will research on the opposite of the given topic.
I have discovered that research is a very pivotal task in PR because if you are dealing with clients, they always have something to research on. For example if you deal with lets say Panasonic, they might need you to research on some other computers or projectors or even televisions and in this case time, effort and attention is needed for perfection of your research. Clients always have something they need to understand especially on their competitors. Sometimes you are given the work to research on whereas your supervisor or boss knows what exactly she or he needs and believe me you have to take your time to do it.
Sometimes research is given to you to check your understanding and how much effort you can put to that work.
Good luck.....
