Today we’ve been having problems with the internet; it has been INCREDIBLELY slow! It made me realise how much I am dependent on the internet for pretty much everything – information, research, use of programs, sourcing images, accessing social media pages, accessing emails…The list goes on.
I’m finding it very difficult to get work done without it. In fact, I struggle to comprehend how the world once operated with no internet! It goes to show how the behavioural patterns of businesses and individuals are now influenced and dictated by communication technology and technological advances.
With not much productiveness possible at the moment, given the time lapse between waiting for loading internet pages, I thought now would be a good opportunity to update my blog with a new entry; which I will have to type on word and wait to upload later, of course.
There have been a few big changes happening in the office. Now that I’m only in the office a couple days a week (Thurs and Fri), there is often more news every time I come in. A couple weeks ago my manager revealed to us that he is undergoing a re-design/re-brand with the business website, signage and logo. He’s largely involved us in the process, by way of having us contribute our ideas for the creative brief and suggestions for the website layout and design. We’ve been trying to have a look at what our competitors are doing on their websites to gain some ideas but right now this is proving impossible!
The re-brand has also caused a bit of a problem for us as the Wedding expo we are attending is next weekend. The promotional material we need printed for the expo can not be printed until the re-brand is complete (or it can, but this means it will not incorporate the new design). Ideally he would like for the new design to be finalized before the expo so that the wedding flyers can be printed using the new design/logo.
However, given our current situation with time, I don’t feel this will be possible as it will probably take up to a week for the flyers to be printed, once sent to the printer. Apart from this, most other plans for the expo are coming together. We have organized all the other equipment we are hiring, organizing the display/set-up, liaised with our booth sharer, hired EFTPOS machines, ordered staff uniforms, discussed pricing for wedding packages, etc.
With the internet down, there is also not much I can do on the Perth Mag website. I was planning today to update the blog and the Facebook page, but the website program is impossible to function at the necessary speed. While, I have been able to check Perth Mag emails, and was pleasantly surprised to get a number of enquiries into submitting articles for the Perth Mag website - and even some article submissions – I’m finding it difficult to reply to them all at the current internet speed. Submissions need to be edited before they are uploaded and pictures also need to be sourced, if none are supplied, which has give me something to do while I wait for the internet to pick up. I’ve also been revising the original PR proposal I had done for it and made the necessary changes and additions to the strategies.
By the end of the expo next weekend I will have completed just over 20 days of work experience. I’ll be in the following week for a couple extra days for evaluation and follow-up enquires/bookings. Then, maybe from there I may decide to come in one day a week to work on Perth Mag – but this can also be done (probably faster) from home. I’ve already spoken to my manager about staying on beyond the 20 days required, and he is happy for me to do so. I’m not sure what I will choose to do yet as I have a second work placement that is becoming increasingly demanding of my time. Having said that, I'm sure I could manage one day a week continuing here; time-management is afterall a crucial skill for PR professionals to master!
Oops, enough jabbering from me...didn't realise I went off on a bit of a personal tangent there... Clearly this is what lack of internet access does to me. Plus there will be a lot of catch-up work for me to do tomorrow because of this. Absence makes the to-do list grow longer!

Hey Niki,
I think we can bounce the comments back n forth quite efficiently haha.. at least we have this bit of technology sorted!
I’ve found following things step by step in “help” quite helpful.. even for stupid tasks like sorting out page numbers in Word, tedious but effective! How has the site development been since the internet issue? Hope it’s going well! It's horrible how dependant we are on things we take for granted, it's become a basic requirement in everyday life now hasn't it?
I’m trying to decide whether or not communication between departments in a bigger firm would be more troublesome than between a smaller consultancy or, in our situation, other students. One would assume that bigger corporations would have more of a system but a consultancy team would have more face time.. maybe us students have it the worst? I do agree that you have to give a little to get a little, especially when it comes to creativity, but it’s hard when emails are the only form of contact. At least you’ve been put in a role where being critical is part of the job description, you’re pretty much entitled to give the feedback you’re required to so take advantage of it! Thanks for the advice though, there should be another web update soon so I’ll speak up with the nitty gritty things then.. wish me luck!
Best wishes
Anna
