Hi Guys,
Well I'm sad to say I've finished my placement at the Water Corporation. Words can't describe how happy I am with the experience I gained at the Corp. I wasn't sure what to take of my placement when I first started but I quickly realised how much I like this field of work. As I mentioned in my previous post I'm also undertaking a Journalism Prac unit at 6PR. Prior to starting my placement at both places I thought radio news was the field I'd like to go into upon graduating, however my time at the Water Corp's made me realise PR is more favorable.
My last days at the Corp involved me continuing the media pack I was constructing for the Ground Water Replenishment Plant about to be announced. I started by making a fact sheet, backgrounder and main messages. I then drafted up a media release on my last day. My supervisor Claire notified me that these documents will be included in the media packs to be handed to various media networks and environmental groups.
I also continued doing my daily jobs i.e. working on the communication department's media wall and I had to gather various numbers for residents who need to be contacted by the media department.
On my second last day I undertook one of the more physically challenging roles I completed at the Corp. This involved working with internal communications. I had to deliver the Corporation's internal newsletter 'flowing on' to every single person working within office, that involved around 1500 people. The Leederville office is the Corporation's largest so you can just imagine how physically tiring this role was! I enjoyed meeting everyone working in all the various departments though, was quite an inciting job to partake in.
So all in all I absolutely loved my time at the Corporation. The experience was amazing and has really made me realise the path I'd like to head down upon graduating.

Hi Emily,
I'm in much the same boat as you, I'm doing journalism as well (which I had my heart set on at the start of my degree) but throughout my degree I've come to realise the flexibility and fun you can have with PR and because of this placement I'm considering it more than journalism.
I've also done physical work when it comes to my placement. I've dispersed pamphlets around the college and it really just shows the scope of work involved in this world. It's actually refreshing doing all of these different things because you don't know what the day will throw at you.
Good luck with your report.
Hamish.
Hi Emily,
It sounds like you have been extremely busy working on the media packs including fact sheets, backgrounders and media releases. I’m sure everything you learnt in PR Techniques would have come in very handy! I have also found the skills I’ve learnt during PR at Curtin have come flooding back when I have needed them to.
Delivering newsletters to 1500 people sounds incredibly challenging and tiring, but on a positive note, it gave you a chance to communicate with your colleagues face-to-face and build those relationships which are necessary for strong internal relations!
I’m glad you have enjoyed your time at your placement. Good luck with your report!
Hi Emily,
It's great to hear you loved your placement! I enjoyed reading about your possible career change into PR because I experienced something similar when completing my internship.
I'm a Marketing and PR student and during my studies at Curtin, the differences between PR and Journalism have always been highlighted. My passion (and somewhat loyalty!?)for PR has often made me think that I would never be interested in journalism and could never see myself pursuing a career in journalism.
However, during my internship at the Department of Education, the inner journalist came out! I conducted interviews and was assigned lots of writing tasks which I was fortunate to have published in two of the Department's magazine editions as well as other publications.
It's interesting how we can have our heart set on a path, yet it can be easily persuaded into another direction.
Goodluck with your future career in what ever path you take!
Bec :)
