Oh my God I'm really late,

Hi everybody,

so I'm Stephanie, today is my twelfth working day, and oh my I'm more than late on the whole program. It's my first entry to the blog since I started my internship, so I'll probably give some details about the job. I'm working with AldoFurn Ltd dealing with the supply of furniture and design of offices in Port Louis. I actually work in the marketing department as they do not have a PR department. I must admit it's kind of a challenge, because PR is perceived differently here in Mauritius. People have the tendency to think of PR people as hostesses rather than professionals/ technicians. However the first day I met the man who was going to interview me, I was quite impressed about how much he was aware of the challenges of this job and how important it was to a company. he knew precisely what I needed to have to be a good PR, how i should behave and told me exactly what he expected of me. I must say that the internship with AldoFurn is a real success.

The jobs I've carried till now are a media kit (Backgrounder, fact sheet, etc...) communications tools (newsletter, brochures, media clippings etc..) and organising an event. still got another event to organise, this one will be more complicated as it will be held in order to celebrate the anniversary of the company so i will need to look for catering services, prepare invitation cards, work on the checklist for the director and eventually draft the speech.

everything is quite exciting in the real life, the satisfaction we get when finishing a job and having done well is indescribable. it's the second internship I'm having for PR and I now I'm certain I made the good choice for my career path, sometimes I really get bored in other modules because I know I'm not doing as well in those, but I undersatand that it's a whole and every knowledge I have will come in handy in the end. It feels great to have the opportunity of sharing all this here because we know we will be understood, now is the time for us to change the perception people have about PR and the only way we can have it this way, is to go out there and show them how professional we are, and prove that we have the skills and knowledge no one else have in terms of communication to allow their business to prosper, by applying everything we've learnt so far during our degree. we are professionals ready to face the world and change the idea of spin doctoring and unethical practices, today we are wise enough to clear out difficult situations by dealing with them with maturity, and most importantly with integrity with respect for our profession.

I find myself in what you have written and I think that you are right.
We are the new generation which is taking the lead into the PR field and should brings changes as to the way PR practitioners or the profession itself as whole is perceived.

I have really enjoyed working in the real life practice also. And yes, it's amazing the self-satisfaction you can get when you feel you have done something but most importantly that you have done something successfully in which you have allocated all your time and devotion.

I am willing to get onto the working PR life again the soonest. I think that the PR field is very interesting and despite being a not so easy task, it is all about challenges. PR practitioners are constantly facing challenges and they have to go about winning it all over for the sake of the company but at times on "utilitarian" grounds as well.. =)

Enjoy your report writing and all the best with the ending part of the module.

Cheers,

Urvi
