Creating More Fresh Ideas and Bonding between team members

Hi! Hope everyone is still holding up and doing well!

This is my second blog post, am at a GolinHarris International Pte Limited. I have been an intern with GH for 1 month and 3 weeks. This had been truly a great learning experience and exposure to what a PR agency does.

Just yesterday we had a work-in-progress (WIP) meeting with everyone in the office. For the new year, this WIP meeting is going to happen fortnightly, so everyone knows what’s happening between colleagues and the company. These sessions will also create a time for all to bond as the company had introduced two activities to help one another out and also recognise colleagues that had done well in the last week.

The first activity is a “GH Board” where everyone will put up an anecdote of what they had learnt or something interesting that had happened or even something another colleague did that was good. Below is one of the stories shared, that I found it very useful and a smart way to answer the question.

My MD was posted with a question, “What are your experiences in the technology field?” In GH Singapore, we are currently trying to expand into the technology field, so technique we lack in that area of experiences. So instead of saying, “We do not have the experience and this is new to us.” She said something in the line of, “We know what we are doing, so you don’t have to worry.”

The other activity that we are encouraged to participant is to put up interesting quotes, tag lines, campaign ideas into the public folder. This is to create something like a “story bank” for everyone in the company. The motive behind this activity is to will help us in times where we have a brain block thus we hope that when reading the quotes, tag lines...will inspire a greater idea.

What are your companies doing to help employees to come up with fresh ideas?

Ah! A fortnightly WIP is a potentially good tactic to solving communication issues in a "best team" basis agency. Of course, daily communication on the floor among team members is still paramount. =)

Hey Jessie!

Sounds like GH has a rather innovative and unique way of conducting brainteasers. I must say it is really interesting. Most of the companies I had worked, particularly in IT sectors would prefer a 48hr close door session to pick the ideas out of everyone's brain.

At the end of the day, most of them were burnt out even though great ideas may have been born that way.

Hi Ginny,

GolinHarris sure seems to be on the right track in encouraging fresh and new ideas from its employees!

At my agency, we have WIP meetings every Monday. It's normaly a casual meeting where all associates update us on new and potential businesses in the company. We also discuss housekeeping issues and interesting current affairs issues we read up on throughout the week. I thoroughly enjoy our WIP meetings as its informal and little preparation beforehand. We usually have monday breakfast together before or after (sometimes during) these WIP meetings. My director always stresses the importance of socializing with your colleagues and attended informal meetings to let your creative juices flow in a comfortable environment. I think, given the size and nature of the agency i'm interning at, these WIP meetings greatly contribute to their success and image as a creative, young and fresh communications company.

Best regards
Inessa
