Proofing

Working at an in-house consultancy has its advantages; one of these being there is more than one person to proof your work!

At Clarity I’ve learnt proofing is very important. It’s a different process to University, where we have to proof our own work. A high percentage is often placed on grammar with our assignments at Uni, where we have to double check our work and proof it ourselves. From what I’ve experienced this is not how it works in the ‘real world’.

Here at Clarity, and I’m sure it’s the same for every other in- house consultancy; work is proofed and checked by a number of people. It’s not uncommon to see work handed around to 4 or 5 different people to check before its ready for submission. I think this is a necessity, as people often miss spelling mistakes, and different people may be able to add different things to a piece of work.

Over the course of my internship I have proofed media releases, content for websites, company reports and many other pieces of work. We are currently working on a report for BHP and I’m sure it would have been proofed more than 2 dozen times. Often this can be a long and tedious process, but I do agree that it is of upmost importance.

Hi,
I totally relate about with what you are talking about.
I had to prepare and send a media release about a concert that Amnesty was doing.
I had to proof read my document yet there were some mistakes left, though I read it once and made another person read it.
I had to correct my mistakes and the release was sent to at least 3 people before it was finally sent to media.
Now that I have worked in real life context I totally understand, that quality writing is a major component of public relation
