Pros and Cons of Social Media

----------------------posted on behalf of Vivian Lee----------

30th of May marked the last day of my internship with ACRES. It has been a great learning platform - from running a major fundraising event to launching a critical PR campaign. I have learnt how effective social media platform can be to charitable organisations like ACRES - free and easy.

Despite the benefits the social media platform can provide, the company must also take note of the risks. If one never utilized it effectively, it can cause the reputation of the company to go down. Should a company starts to use the social media such as having a face book page or twitter account, it must be committed to updating it regularly to maintain a good relationship with its stakeholders. Also, one must take precaution when replying or posting any comments because any bad or unpleasant comment on the net can be pass on to millions of people in just a short period of time.

Insights of this interesting page: http://mondobeat.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/social-media-pros-cons/ - Using social media can be very time intensive and who knows, you can attract the wrong crowd of people who might works against your organisation. Thus, a company should think twice before integrating social media into one of their communication tools.

All in all, it has been a great placement with ACRES, nice and helpful supervisor and colleagues, my interested field of work (animals-related), at the same time applying the skills I had learnt throughout my course of studies.

Cheers!

Hi Vivian,

I have to agree that social media is an important tactical tool in PR. Due to its accessibility, I think, social media is a great way for organisations to keep its stakeholders up to date.

However, the PR practitioner should always engage in monitoring their online profiles to avoid any conflict of interest of misrepresentation, especially when the public are given access to post comments on their profile. I have seen quite a few advertisements (ie: plumbing advert in a non profit organisation Facebook wall) that are inappropriate to the organisation. Therefore, the person in charge of managing social media should always sign up for email notifications for incoming comments.

hi Viv

despite social media have disadvantages i totally go and would advise any company to start using it as it is convienent, easy to access a large amount of audience, give suggestions and feedback as to how the company can improve its services.
in a company there has to be two way communication and by having either facebook page or twitter account it means the organisation has a potential of reaching a wide market hence it is important for organisations to include social media in their strategies to enhance its corporate and brand image globally.
Social media is about an organisation getting personal with its public hence in Facebook, the public becomes the company’s ‘friends’. This relationship is important in that the company has to be open, transparent and honest.

Hey,

I completely agree that social media has become an important and valuable part of public relations!

While it can have many negative effects for a company there are also an equal amount of positive outcomes it can achieve. Not only can it be used to create a personality for a company but it can be a valuable research tool.

Currently in the Alumni team at Curtin we are expanding our social network use. This is really exciting as we now have a hugely increased amount of research and information available to us. This research ensures we are effectively targeting and communicating with relevant stakeholders.
