I can't believe my internship at Nine has come to an end. Twenty days has absolutely flown by! I feel I have only begun to scratch the surface of the operations at Nine, yet at the same time I have learnt and experienced so much!
Working in the publicity and marketing department has given me a good insight into the difference between public relations and marketing. Text books say marketing is a social and managerial process by which people create and exchange products and values (Kotler, Bowen, Makens, 2006) and public relations encompasses a master of characteristics ranging from media, writing, events and strategic planning (Wilcox, 2009).
I have learnt that there is a very fine line between the two areas. I don't believe that marketing and public relations can be combined in the same role. At Channel Nine the roles were differentiated by activities and media we paid for and activities and media we didn't pay for. Everything paid for was considered as a marketing role which included sponsorships, advertising and promotions. Publicity/public relations involved media liaison, media monitoring, research, disc distribution, program promotions and organising interviews.
One thing Channel Nine really taught me to manage is time and pressure! Some days I would have several tasks I would have to complete by the end of the day. One example was research where I had three hours to contact every single regional newspaper in WA. Plus I had my usual tasks to do. This was fantastic experience and I still completed my usual tasks to a professional and high quality standard by the end of the day.
I hope everyone else has enjoyed and learnt as much from there placement as I have!
Thanks,

I really resonate with your paragraph about the fine line between public relations and marketing. I find within my placement at Jackson McDonald Lawyers, public relations is largely unrecognised and almost slightly feared. Little to their knowledge a great proportion of the activities I undertake under "marketing" are actually public relations based.
I also think it's interesting to note the definition of marketing and public relations from a text book in contrast to its execution in the work environment.
I think you had a great placement!

Hi Kelly
What an amazing internship you got to complete! It sounds like you learnt a lot & i completely agree with you statement of managing time and pressure.I have been in a similar situation at my placement but probably not as intense as it may have been for you.
Congratulations on completing an amazing internship :)
