So this is my second blog post for my placement at Muse Bureau. If you haven’t read my last post and are wondering what Muse Bureau is, they are a boutique arts and entertainment Public Relations Consultancy, representing the likes of Perth Theatre Company, Fringe Festival, Beaux Arts Ball and Perth Fashion Festival!
Since my last post it has been full steam ahead. I attended the calendar launch party for Perth Fashion Festival held at 140 William. Coffees were brewing, fashionistas were mingling, photographers were snapping and the media were monitoring, and I was loving every minute. PFF director Mariella Harvey-Hanrahan and Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi each made a brief speech before models took to the catwalk, wearing Aurelio Costarella, Wheels & Dollbaby, Ae’lkemi, Story By Tang, S2, Magdalena Velevska and Yeojin Bae, giving everyone a sneak peek of what was in store for this year. Oh, and how could I forget the amazing gift bag? Jam-packed with Baci chocolates, L’oreal products, the limited edition PFF 2011 calendar, San Pellegrino and a 140-canvas bag.
Perth Theatre Company has also been extremely busy. Their current show, Tender Napalm, has caused a stir among local media outlets when their billboard was deemed too controversial to be displayed. It reignited the debate of nudity in advertising, with Tender Napalm being featured in the Inside Cover of The West Australian not once, not twice, but three times! Here is the ad;
What is your opinion? Do you think a shirtless couple in an embrace is too sexual to be shown on outdoor billboards?
Back at the bureau it has been report after report after report. Finally the reports for Beaux Arts Ball, Jandamarra, The Disappearances Project, The Pride, Africa and The Ugly One have been finalised. Since finishing these it has been all about Perth Fashion Festival, having to source props for various runway shows and finalising model castings. Perth Fashion Festival is going to be great this year, so I suggest you get your hands on some tickets to some of the shows or alternatively, if you’re a poor student like me, head along to some of the free shows.
So far I have learnt a lot about working in a busy PR consultancy. Here are a few of my tips…
- You are there to support your bosses. Any task they ask you to do, do it thoroughly and do it time efficiently.
- Be a helper not a hindrance. Find tasks to do to support the team. Anything from coffee runs to organizing paperwork in the office. If you haven’t been assigned something to do then find something to do, don’t just sit there and wait for directions.
- Fit in to the working environment.
- Always be professional. You are representing your company so always be professional when sending emails and attending events.
- INITIATIVE, INITIATIVE, INITIATIVE!
Thanks for reading!

Hi Lucy
You're five points are spot on. I'm at a (very) small boutique consultancy and have found that my role is to do whatever is thrown at me to help my boss out. And initiative is a huge part of that. It's something not a lot of people use, and if you want to make the best of your placement, and possibly have the opportunity to work on when your 20 days are over, initiative is very important.
You're organisation sounds so exciting! I volunteered at Perth Fashion Festival last year and it was amazing, I hope you enjoy it too!
Lauren :)
