Hey everyone!
Wow I have seriously neglected this blogging - well I've been reading everyone else's experiences but I haven't really been telling you about my own. So I think it's about time I give a bit of an update seeing as though I started my placement at the end of January and the semester is about to finish in a few weeks!
So I'm at Networking WA in northbridge, a tiny tiny event management company that does amazing work considering the small manpower behind it all.
I've only been doing 1 day a week because they have an intern for each day of the week - so for a very very long time I have been the Wednesday intern! haha. But now that a couple of interns are finishing I am now doing Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will finish up in a couple of weeks! I found that it was a bit annoying for them to have so many interns because doing 1 day a week means that they can't afford to give their interns big tasks and really involve us as much as we would like. So I have been doing many excel spreadsheets - finding contacts for events (literally filling in names/numbers/addresses of important people in over 200 companies, you can imagine it getting a bit tedious...)
One of the more interesting things include researching venues and contacting clients and such to get prices and information. I enjoy actually talking to people as opposed to staring at a computer screen all day going cross-eyed. I also get involved with brainstorming with the team for ideas such as ways of reaching clients (advertising on forums and email content) which is nice.
I've been involved with a few events during the placement here at Networking WA including an event called "speed networking" that was really interesting! It was exactly what you think it would be... speed dating but instead, its networking - totally not trying to hook people up. While working with this organisation it has really emphasised the importance of meeting and connecting with people. I remember one of our lecturers Nigel, in PR 201(or whatever the introduction PR course was called :p) repeating and repeating and repeating the importance of networking! It's true guys, you should listen to your lecturers and tutors! hahaha..
In fact, on Friday, Networking WA held a little networking event for us interns which was amazing. It was just at the office and they invited a few close friends that they had from different organisations, provided a few nibblies and drinks and it was a very small, friendly environment for us to make connections.
Anyway that's enough ramble for now, I'll be posting again soon! Hopefully with more interesting things now that I'm there for 2 days a week YAY :D
Steff
