Introducing National Disability Services

So, I thought I would bite the bullet and write my very first blog post.  This is a first for me, I’ve never blogged before but I’m quite excited about sharing my pending internship experience with you all.

Like many of you, I’ve just started my internship.  Fortunately my placement is with my current employer, National Disability Services (NDS), where I am the Communications Officer for Western Australia.
NDS is the national industry association for disability service providers, representing over 770 member organisations in Australia.  Our members operate services for Australians with all types of disability, ranging in size from small support groups to large multi-service organisations.  As well as assisting members meet relevant industry and government standard, NDS also aims to influence governments at both state/territory and federal levels to provide a policy environment that is responsive to the needs of people with disability and their service providers.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the disability sector, there has been some major changes within the past year.  The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is one of the most significant changes to happen, receiving a lot of support and media attention.  I encourage you to watch the following videos of how the NDIS will change lives:

In my coming blog posts I hope to provide you with useful insights about working for a not-for-profit organisation, my role as the Communications Officer and some of the projects I am currently working on for my internship placement.
Until next week,
Jess Fuimaono (14557626)
