A few days into my intern and I've been spot on the spot!

Hi Fellow PR393 Students!

This is my second blog post, which I will be discussing what I have done so far into my placement and what I will be working on throughout my 20 days with angelhands.

On the second day of my internship, my supervisor got me to start looking through information from the 50k in 50 days fundraising campaign. At first I was quite confuse as to what and why I
had to read through the boring piles of notes and drafts because I was starting to doze off during
work hours. I was trying my best to stay awake! Then before I knew it, I had to familiar myself with all
those documents as I will be working closely with the fundraising committee.

So currently, I'm working on a the 50K in 50 Days fundraising campaign where my first task was to set up a campaign brief so the campaign committee are able to review it and make any necessary changes
before the board meeting. This felt like quite a huge task for me and I could not believe that I was
writing a real life brief with my own ideas for the organisation to follow up on instead for just a university assignment. It made me feel important and I had to be responsible and reliable for the work that I was going to do. But it was also exciting at the same time to see what I could come up with.

I am grateful and glad for what I have learned while studying at Curtin University! If not because
of the practical assignments like writing press releases and/or reports for real life clients, I would not be
able to accomplish the task that I am given by my supervisor.

I was also in given the role of making sure the poster of the campaign would appeal to the public which I had to meet the graphic designer to lead him in the right direction for the campaign which includes my opinion on what looks good and what doesn’t; as well as the information that will be shown on the poster as well. I had to liaise with him to make sure everything is going well, but of course report back to my supervisor and she would make the final decisions.

I felt like I was put on the spot when I decided to intern with angelhands; especially because I am currently the only PR personnel in this organisation as of present.

I hope to get my hands into the social media side of things as well though, by helping angelhands with their Facebook and/or Twitter pages.

This is what I've accomplish so far and will keep you posted on what angelhands have got installed for me next. (:

Hey Deanne,

I feel like we are in similar situations. I am in a small organisation where there is no dedicated PR personnel.
I can relate to you with feeling overwhelmed when given a task, that you know is important, and doubting whether you have the skills and ability to do well. I think this is something that all newcomers to the professional world experience.
The basic skills learnt at University have definitely helped when are able to relax and remember all the basics that you learnt, and realise that you do have the capability to complete the task.

Social media is a great tool for not-for-profits to use to raise awareness with the general public whilst remaining cost effective. My role in the organisation I am working for is to manage the social media and it is a constant learning curve, as what you know and have learnt from managing your personal profiles is different from managing an organisation's profile. There are so many tools that can be used, such as Facebook Ads and Hootsuite, which make social media initiatives more effective. I think that this is something that the PR degree at Curtin University needs to put more emphasis on, as social media is something that PR practitioners cannot afford to ignore.

Hi Deanne,Vicki

I too have done my placement with an organisation with no dedicated PR personnell. From the beginning with CEDA, I posed to them as to why they have no PR deaprtment, and exactly what my role would be in the compancy. I was also confused as to what daily tasks would be. However I was given many different tasks involving the prepartion and planning of the weekley events.

However since my time with CEDA, I believe all organisations employ certain PR agendas within the dynamics of the organisations strategies despite not having dedicated PR department. I beleive PR is employed on an unconscious level. Branding, image, media, reputation management are things at the forefront of all organisations objectives.

What do you guys think?

Hi Deanna,

Great blog post and its super interesting for me to read as my experience in this unit has been completely different as I have worked with a large mining company in the public affairs department so there is always someone i can ask questions of or receive help when i am confused about something!
I commend you on actually going for it and doing it on your own, great effort, I myself feel overwhelmed at times within my placement even though i know i can ask for help!

That feeling of nerves is something i think every single student doing this unit has experienced, but the benefits of finishing tasks and doing something you feel proud of certainly make that disappear!

Having information and knowledge from university is great to refer back to when you feel stuck and you don't have three weeks to come up with a brief only three hours!

Social media is such a fantastic platform for initiating conversation amongst share/stakeholders and having an instantaneous connection with the wider public, I certainly hope you get to show your placement your skills in that area soon!

Good luck

Hayley
