During my time as the Event Assistant for the Rottnest
Channel Swim Association I was placed with the task of finding the official
design for the official 2013 HBF Rottnest Channel Swim T-Shirt!
It is safe to say that I never thought one of my jobs would
be choosing T-shirt designs!
After working with the wonderful Sasha Jonas from Blue Dog Communications
and overlooking her wonderfully written press release I was left with the task
of promoting the competition to the public of Perth through the Rottnest
Channel Swim Association’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages – the power of social
media!
After posting about the T-shirt design competition on just
three simple platforms I and the Executive officer were in undated with entries
from a wide variety of individuals! Everyone from graphic artists, primary
school student, high school student, mothers, fathers and grandparents – it was
clear to see just how iconic the Rottnest Channel Swim is to a wide variety of
individual.
After countless Facebook posts, twitter ‘tweets’ and even a
few E-newsletters we were able to decide on a final three before making the
decision on the final design!
The final design depicts the field of swimmers leaving from
Cottesloe Beach and swimming towards Rottnest Island – the perfect representation
of the world’s largest open water swim!
This task showed me just how varied roles can be within a
PR, marketing or events role and also the power of social media; you just never
know what task is around the corner!
Regards,
Jayne.

That sounds like a good competition to work on! I haven't had the chance to work on any competitions at my placement but it seems like it would be a bit of fun sorting through all the designs. Looks like you picked a good design for the shirts and I'm sure we'll all see a bunch of them around the traps pretty soon!
Congratulations Jayne!
It is a very good opportunity for you to be able to apart of the competition and having the chane to work with the HBF Rottnest Channel Swim T-Shirt!
Social media is a good platform to promote the event, as it will allow the audience of the post to see the details of the event and they are being able to ask any enquiries about it and give feedback about the t shirt designs.
Did you have fun choosing the designs? Did anyone choose it with you? It sounds really interesting and fun :)
I hope to see your designs for the shirts soon!

Hi Jayne,
It sounds like being apart of the Rottnest Channel Swim Association has been a wonderful experience and allowed you to learn alot. I think it would have been beneficial for you to have to work with people form other organisations as well and as a plus you get to make even more connections in the industry.
Using social media in order to promote the competition was a great idea and allows everyone in the community to be involved with the process. I think you made a great choice in regards to the design and it highlights what a big role social media plays in our lives and in the business world as well.
Hope you enjoyed your placement.

Hi Jane,
What an incredible task you were given picking the design for a shirt thousands of people will be wearing!
It is nice to read about all the different areas PR pracitioners can have a role in and one you obviously enjoyed so much.
This would have been a great way to learn what an important role social media can play in public relations and community to stakeholders.
Congratulations and I look forward to seeing your chosen design on shirts around the place next year!
All the best,
Lucy Morrison
Its amazing what you got an opportunity to do! And on a large scale as well.
And its nice that social media played a huge part in what you got to do. Just goes to show that everyones connected to each other now, somehow, and that theres no target audience that we can not reach :)
