Social media as a Public Awareness tool....
Promotional activities/events play a large role encouraging people to engage with an event, either in person or through social media.
This Friday (9th August) we staged an event called 'Friday Frenzy' in Forrest Place in Perth's CBD. The event aimed to encourage people to register by promoting a one day only 10% discount on registration fees.
The event was attended by volunteers and staff from Activ, trainers from Jetts Fitness, the Chevron Cheerleaders, 94.5 and Channel Nine.
Throughout the majority of the event, my role was to roam around the shopping precinct on Hay Street with a promotional sign and the Chevron Cheerleaders to encourage people to;
1) Take a photo with the sign
2) Upload it to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #ctsjourney
In doing this they would then be in the running to win a $500 Asics voucher.
Although one of the key aims of the event was to encourage people to register, another key aim was to promote the event within the local Perth community and increase our online social media presence.
Maintaining a social media presence is becoming an increasingly important aspect of Public Relations. The Chevron City to Surf aims to engage with their stakeholders such as participants by encouraging them to share their City to Surf journey by uploading photos of themselves to Instagram or Facebook with the hastag #ctsjourney or #bestwhenshared.

Hi Laura,
Looks like you are having fun at your placement! I totally agree with you about the importance of public awareness and presence, especially when your trying to raise awareness of a small or new company. It doesn't help when your in such a small city like Perth where everyone knows everyone and people like to stay connected and updated on what's new and hot in Perth.
The Friday Frenzy event sounds fun and a great way to get people on board! Did you get many competitors signing up? And many Instagram posts with the hashtag? Sounds like a fun way to increase awareness and increase competitors for the big race.
Social media is so easy to use and literally anyone can create an account and snap a quick photo on their smart phones. It permits everyone to become a creator, user and overall participate because of the accessibility of it all.
Keep on having fun!
Lydia
