I quite fancy myself as the corporate type.
Selecting a ‘corporate’ outfit, preparing ‘corporate’ lunch (salad) and
catching the ‘corporate’ bus filled with ‘corporate’ people into the
‘corporate’ world of West Perth. On a completely shallow level it makes me
feel…important. Realistically though it makes me feel like I have purpose and I
believe having purpose in life is responsible for cultivating happiness. There
is a whole degree (occupational therapy) dedicated to helping people regain or
obtain purpose in their lives, so it must have some sort of value. Anyway, why
does all of this matter? It matters to me because I graduate at the end of this
semester and I have no idea what my purpose will be after this!? Hopefully, a
job in PR, maybe a new city, new challenges…a whole new chapter. Sometimes I
get overwhelmed with excitement at the thought and other times I am paralyzed
by fear. Anyway, that is enough of my fleeting thoughts…let’s discuss business.
Day two in my corporate life was filled with
meetings and strategy development. Karl, Clare and myself met with Julie, the
marketing coordinator, to discuss the online marketing strategy for the annual
National Heritage Festival. Meeting contents included how we would approach
marketing the event, what worked well previously as well as who will be
responsible for the various tasks. I mostly observed during the meeting and
took notes. Admittedly, I think finding the balance between knowing when to be
vocal and when to ‘shut up’ is going to be a hard task. John Lovett said in his
commencement speech to Pitzer College students, ‘be confident in your potential
and aware of your inexperience.’ This is good advice, it is important to be
aware that at times our ideas will be fresh, innovative and completely untested.
Yet, they are exactly that and sometimes it is best to listen to someone who
has been around the block. Striking that balance is something I can only hope
to get better at with time.
The afternoon was fill with strategy
development and fact researching. The details associated with this task are
minimal and dull so I shall not bore you with them.
Day two completed!
