Why Social Media is Vital in the Field of PR

In the last couple of years, it's fair to say Social Media has exploded. It's very rare to hear of someone that doesn't have a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other form of a social media account. However, as time has passed it seems like businesses have realised what an excellent tool social media is. Its free, can reach many people, and very immediate.

Self admittedly, I am addicted to my social media accounts, accessing Facebook multiple times daily, checking Twitter regularly to see what is happening, and having a look on Instagram to see what my friends are up to. Having an internship at an organisation that uses a lot of social media marketing definitely made me appreciated the power of social media more than ever before. Hockey WA relays a lot of information to followers such as match scores, goalscorers and ladder positions of club teams that is made easily accessable with just one click.

Whilst assisting at the International Super Series Hockey 9's tournament, it become more clear that social media was a very key tool. As well as tweeting live match scores, we were able to answer questions such as what time gates opened and what times matches started.

I think it is fair to say no one could have foreseen the impact social would have on every day life! It will be interesting to what other technological advancements follow the introduction of social media in years to come.
