It has been a while since my last post and I am soon to leave my place of internship as my 20 days are up. I could have stayed on longer if I wished to, however after interning with this particular organization for the last few months I have come to realize that the government sector is not for me. Luckily, I have managed to score another internship for a consultancy which I think I will find to be far more enjoyable and suitable for myself.
Although I say the government sector is not for me, that's not to say I haven't enjoyed my time there. I have learnt a lot from my supervisor, now have an understanding of the flow of the PR world and most importantly I have made some connections!
The reason I say that government is not for me is mainly due to the lack of freedom and creativity. I have always enjoyed creating PR plans because it gives me the freedom to think up campaigns and interesting ways to direct a particular message to stakeholders. With my place of internship, I have found it to be fairly strict with tight rules and regulations and obviously a lot of policy. I knew that would likely be the case going into a government organization, however you never know what you like until you give it a go and I am very glad that I did as it allowed to me know where I want to go next.
Not only have I learnt a great deal about the type of organization that I would like to work in in the future, but this internship has also helped me to learn a lot about myself as a PR professional. I really enjoy PR, I love seeing the media pick up a story that I have fed them, I love the image management part of PR and I have found that I have a strong interest in the social media side of things.
I am excited about the future and happy that I now have a better understanding of where my place is in this big PR world.

Hi Lana,
It’s really great to hear that you can recognise which areas of PR you can work in and which you can’t. It’s great that you know where you skills and passion lies.
I remember during one of my PR classes a tutor was telling us that Perth is actually a very ‘boring’ city to work in, in PR terms. Apparently our government organisation and private companies are unwilling to take risks, where as over in the eastern states clients are much more adventurous and PR practitioners are able to be much more creative.
I’m not sure if she was just hating on Perth but if it is true, it sounds like you would be a shoe in over there! It sounds like you would have so many great opportunities to let your creative juices flow!
All the best for your PR future,
Jacqui :)
