Starting something new is never easy, stepping out of your
comfort zone is a challenge, but I challenge that I am happy to take on.
Walking in on day one I had no idea what to expect, would I
just be making coffees for everyone? Going to buy lunches? Cleaning the dishes?
Will they throw me right in the deep end and not explain anything properly and
expect me to know what I am doing?
Well, I am happy to say that none of the above
happened. I walked in and was introduced
to everyone and I felt very welcomed. I didn’t make any coffees (except for
myself)
I got given a task to create a database for a contact list
where I had to call up people and get contact information. It seems like a
pretty simple task, but talking on the phone can be a bit daunting, especially
with everyone in the office in ear shot of you nervously mumbling when someone
asks you a question you have no idea about but you try and answer in the best
way possible.
The day flew by and before I knew it it was home time, I had
survived. I really enjoyed my day and was actually excited to go back the next
day!
Tip of the day: If you are in a position where you need to
find contact details – be proactive – don’t be afraid to call up and ask
someone for their number. It can be daunting, but after a while you get used to
it and you get through your task a lot faster.

Hi Isabella,
I'm glad that your first day wasn't anything like you imagined! I felt exactly the same before my first day! I didn't know what to expect. But as soon as I arrived on my first day everyone was eager to meet me, and very kind. Believe me, it only gets better! I'm now half way through my internship and I feel almost at home!
I feel your pain with phone calls! It's very hard, as you say, because your phone conversations interrupt everyone else. This is especially daunting in my situation, as I don't actually work in the communications division. Therefore, sometimes I feel like I'm constantly the only one on the phone interrupting everyone else.
It's great to hear you're off to a good start! I look forward to hearing more about your journey in the coming weeks!
Best wishes!
Regards,
Sarah Koch
Hi Isabella,
Congratulations on your internship with Magenta!
I had exactly the same concerns as you when I started my internship, I was pretty nervous on the first day. It is great that everyone has been welcoming to you, it is must easier to develop your skills in an environment where you feel comfortable. I have been lucky to have very welcoming staff who haven’t put me on coffee duty either.
Your advice to be proactive when looking for contact details is perfect, I have been asked lots of times to find contacts details and found the quickest way to find them was just to pick up the phone. I also found the task of phoning clients or contacts very daunting in the open plan office, the more that I had to make calls the more comfortable I began to feel.
I hope you continue to enjoy the work you are doing, it sounds like amazing experience!
Good luck for the rest of your internship,
Sophie xx
Hi Isabella,
I'm glad to hear your internship at Magenta is going well and your first day was nothing like you imagined!
I too was presented the task of formulating a data base and realised how important that document really is to a company.
I totally understand what you mean about phone calls. I too was nervous and it seemed every time I called someone it just happened to be completely quiet in the office and felt as if everyone was listening.
However it was an easy fear to overcome!
Good luck for the rest of your internship!
