What I learn during the first 10 days of my Internship (plus or minus)

Hi, I'm Diyana, from Curtin Sarawak.

For a first post, I would like to share my 10 days experience of doing my Internship at Miri City Council (MCC).

I was a bit nervous before I met the second boss within Public Relations section... thinking that whether I will do well in my Internship. But luckily for me, the staff at MCC were very friendly, and they were willing to answer my questions whenever there was something I didn't know or understand.

What I learnt is:

1. Be an observant and ask questions

- Before I started my work, I became an observant to see how they do work at MCC. This is just in my personality that I prefer to observe, then I follow how people do their work.
- Secondly, always ask questions. I didn't hesitate at all to ask any questions that popped in my head, and just ask straight away. It depends on them whether they can offer me the best answers that I was looking for. It's not always the best answers, but it is something within my reach that I can learn as a PR intern.

2. Be a good listener

- MCC is an organisation that focuses on delivering their best services for Miri community. I was asked to go to the front counter, where I were to deal with customer complaints face-to-face with them. Customers came to MCC and shared their problems with us. I must be attentive and listened carefully to their problems and answer accordingly to how the senior staff taught me. Also, as a service center, I must give the best smile I could so to ensure them that MCC will take care of their problems.

3. Be friendly with everyone

- People love friendly people. Talk to them, any kinds of stories. It would be better if it's about current events happening in the world.

4. Ask them to give more work

- Just ask them to give you more work, no matter how little it is. You are an intern for a short term, so take the opportunity to learn as many things as you can. Even if the work is as simple as photocopying documents. You may need that skill in the future, who knows?

So based on my 10 days of experience, it is a PLUS for me to learn at Miri City Council. It was a great opportunity for me to gather as much experience as I want to in a working world.
