The PROS & CONS of NOT-FOR-PROFITS

I was lucky enough to have been offered my internship at Relay for Life (RFL) Fremantle as I was approached by a previous high- school friend on the committee who expressed their urgent need for PR/ MARKETING members. I can’t help but look back and agree with tutors and industry professionals who have stressed that CONTACTS are vital to PR professionals.

My experience has reaffirmed that even the most unexpected of friends (in different fields of study) can act as a source of contact. The beauty of PR is that it is adopted in almost every industry in which networking even with friends/ relatives could lead to significant opportunities!

Before diving into my experience, here are some quick facts about RFL Fremantle.

QUICK FACTS:
- RFL is one of Cancer Council’s fundraising events that takes places across Australia.
- RFL provides communities a chance to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer/ are undergoing treatment/ their carers as well as celebrating the memory of loved ones lost to cancer.
- Teams of 10-15 fundraise all year round, meeting at Relay to celebrate the fundraising achievements - RFL is an overnight community event in which teams participate in a relay-style walk/ run.

For those who are interested in working in the NON-PROFIT sector, here are the PROs and CONs drawn from my experience so far.

PROS:
• Working for a great cause- towards fighting and eliminating CANCER
• Working with a bunch of passionate, welcoming and dedicated individuals on the committee
• Working in a relaxed environment (ability to share ideas without feeling pressurised/ judged)
• The ability to develop creative PR strategies without too many constraints
• A rewarding experience- getting to know fundraising teams & stories of loved ones fighting/ fought cancer

CONS:
• Large responsibilities placed on each committee member due to the limited number of members
• As the committee is comprised of volunteers, time management can be an issue aside from work/ studies etc.
• As a not-for-profit organisation, you are forced to consider and work with a limited budget

More to come,

Hi Charmaine

Sounds like your organisation works towards a fantastic cause. I am so interested about how NFP's work considering the importance of money in so many aspects of PR work. Just how hard has it been for you to work with a limited budget???
Hope your internship has been a success so far. Relay for Life is such a great initiative.

Hi Greta!

It definitely has been a rewarding experience.
Working with a limited budget can be difficult, however, it hasn't been too challenging.
Drawing from past PR assignments, I learnt that I had to be CREATIVE in developing PR strategies for not-for-profits, and working with resources that are free- for example, social media was a big tool that has been effective in developing competitions for RFL and reaching target audiences- I'll be posting my next blogpost soon so keep an eye out for it :)
