TPFF 15

It doesn’t get much bigger than this event for the fashion industry in Perth. The Telstra Perth Fashion Festival 2015 (TPFF) was one of the many highlights I experienced through my internship.

Having never participated in TPFF before or worked with a designer, I was extremely intimidated leading up to the event, but eager to learn as much as I could.

While my role with Steph Audino for TPFF 2015 wasn’t revolved around Public Relations (although leading up to the event there was media liaising in regards to photo shoots and news articles), it was to help Steph in anyway I could and learn as much about the fashion industry as I could to see if it is an industry I wanted to be apart of.

The lead up to the night was all about organising the event as best we could.
As a team we:
  • ·      Went to model castings
  • ·      Decided the line up for the outfits
  • ·      Went to model fittings
  • ·      Finalised shoes, steaming etc.
  • ·      Dressed the models for dress rehearsal

On the night of the show I was apart of the back of house (BOH) team for the Steph Audino show on closing night. And BOH was chaotic, stinking hot and confined, yet it was exhilarating, fast paced and so much fun.

Words cannot describe the atmosphere backstage, it was electrifying and adrenaline pumping. Dressing models is by far an extremely stressful job; trying to zip, button, add belts, lace up shoes and make sure everything is 110% correct before they step foot on the runway.

Although no matter how stressful, it was an amazing experience and a success that I wouldn’t have been able to be apart of if I hadn’t undertaken this internship at Steph Audino. I couldn’t be more grateful or lucky to be apart of it.

This event definitely re-ignited my feelings towards wanting to be apart of the fashion industry through public relations.

Did you feel that your internship help you decide whether or not you wanted to pursue a role in the public relations industry? Why/why not?

Hi Brigette,

Sounds like you had a great experience at the TPFF this year!
I volunteered at the fashion festival last year and had an amazing experience as well. :)
I can definitely agree that B.O.H. was chaotic yet exhilarating with such a small time frame to change the models before they are pushed back onto the runway again!

If you do decide to volunteer again next year, I would definitely recommend also applying for Front of House, as it is a whole different experience. It is less chaotic where you act as an usher guiding guests to their seats, VIPs to the after party, and getting to actually watch the fashion shows which was a bonus! I would also recommend asking for a PR/ Marketing role as there are different responsibilities for those girls eg. taking photos for social media, liaising with photographers, working with journalists etc.

hey there!

You experience with the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival 2015 sounds amazing! I would love to be able to do something like that!

What really made me pause though was how you mentioned that being part of the event made you realize you wanted to be part of the fashion industry and your question at the end really brought a certain point home for me.

As much as I am enjoying my experience here in Kuala Lumpur, and of course I am very grateful for the opportunity, I have come to realize that maybe I am not cut out for a career that is straight up public relations and perhaps I should consider pursuing other interests.

As you described your experience back stage, I thought about how much fun it would be to photograph an event like that! So there it was, I really just want to get into film and photography work really.

The internship has however given me a new set of skills that will undoubtedly help in whatever career I choose to follow, as I am sure you would agree too. But maybe one needs to consider that there might be other application of PR theory and practice, other than just doing mainstream public relations work.

I hope your experience has remained as interesting as this post of yours suggest and I wish you best of luck!
